#9087 cifs mounts fails with error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system
Closed: fixed 2 years ago by frenaud. Opened 2 years ago by sumenon.

Issue

cifs mounts fails with error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Tests in test_smb.py fail

Actual behavior

DEBUG ipatests.pytest_ipa.integration.host.Host.client0.cmd161:transport.py:513 RUN ['mount', '-t', 'cifs', '//client1.ipa.test/homes', '/mnt/smb', '-o', 'user=user1@IPA.TEST,pass=SecretUser1']
DEBUG ipatests.pytest_ipa.integration.host.Host.client0.cmd161:transport.py:557 mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system
DEBUG ipatests.pytest_ipa.integration.host.Host.client0.cmd161:transport.py:557 mount error(19): No such device
DEBUG ipatests.pytest_ipa.integration.host.Host.client0.cmd161:transport.py:557 Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)
DEBUG ipatests.pytest_ipa.integration.host.Host.client0.cmd161:transport.py:217 Exit code: 32

Expected behavior

cifs mount should work

Same failure seen in testing_master_latest PR 1440 report

This looks like a kernel issue in the images we use. Can you try to run that image locally and reproduce:

# modinfo cifs
# modprobe cifs

I have no problem for cifs.ko on 5.14.14 kernel on F34.

With the freeipa/ci-master-f35 box v 0.0.2:

With the 0.0.3:

[root@fedora ~]# uname -a
Linux fedora 5.15.13-200.fc35.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 16:39:13 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

[root@fedora ~]# modinfo cifs

[root@fedora ~]# ls /lib/modules/5.15.13-200.fc35.x86_64/kernel/fs/cifs/
[root@fedora ~]#

The image is missing the cifs module.

@abiagion could you check if a rebuild of the image is needed? Same problem is seen on master-latest, master-previous, ipa-4-9-latest and ipa-4-9-previous

I think this commit in Fedora kernel broke it in November 2021: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/kernel/c/c2b24705e7bef009ee3bf63ebcfa111b92996936?branch=f35.

This means it is now part of kernel-modules subpackage.
