During the rework of certificate validation, some error messages were dropped (e.g. message about certificate expiration, which breaks CA-less testing). Bring these back.

@slaz What are the affected use cases?
This can be seen in CA-less installation where we don't get the message that a certificate expired but get "Invalid for a SSL server" instead which is definitely less helpful.
