#5304 Make User category sidebar collapsable
Opened 8 years ago by adelton. Modified 7 years ago

With the User Life-Cycle Management (http://www.freeipa.org/page/V4/User_Life-Cycle_Management) new in FreeIPA 4.2.0, the user WebUI real estate is consumed by the sidebar listing User categories. It's be nice if the user table could be used at full width of the screen like in previous versions.

Couple questions to asses priority:

  • Which problem does it solve?
  • Is it just a preference?
  • In which configuration(browser size, zoom level) current way does not work?

Couple questions to asses priority:
* Which problem does it solve?

Every user line in the table taking two-row height because the Status column content gets wrapped to make for the lack of horizontal space, and ultimately need to scroll horizontally which was not there before even if there are no other than Active users.

  • Is it just a preference?

It is an attempt to address regression when with exactly the same data on exactly the same browser, 4.1 showed more records and had less whitespace than 4.2. Since at least initially after upgrade, the Stage and Preserved have no content while Active can have many, it'd surely be nice to make the new feature as easy on existing users as possible.

I understand that the new selection of User categories has to live somewhere, I'm just not sure non-collapsible sidebar is the best approach.

Of course, any other way to utilize the screen real-estate as efficiently as in 4.1 would work too.

  • In which configuration(browser size, zoom level) current way does not work?

Firefox 40.0.3, the same zoom I used for 4.1.

From triage: It would be nice if the menu is more responsive and maybe move from side bar to top menu on small screen devices... But overall, sounds as rather Future Releases type of issue. We can wait for more feedback with 4.2.
