In F17 FirewallD will provide a DBUS interface for managment of the ipatables. IPA should take advantage of this interface or command line to configure ports that need to be open. The alternative is to use the systemd files where one would be able to describe what ports need to be automatically open for each service. This will be availble in F17 too.
