#1678 [RFE] IP address assignment
Closed: Invalid None Opened 12 years ago by admiyo.

When adding a host, we allow the user to add an IP address. This requires gathering a bunch of infomration, and could be streamlined and automated.

First, the IP Address is supposed to be from a range coverd by a reverse zone. However, we can allow the user to select the revers zone, and give an option to auto assign the next available IP Address in that zone that is within the Netmask. This will work for both IPv4 and V6.

For IPv6, the ideal choice for /64 networks would be to use the Autoconfiguration scheme from http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4862 but that involves knowing the Mac address of the machine. This can either be deferred until a host comes up requesting the hostname, or the user can enter the MAC

For IPv6 It may make more sense to Generate a Random extension, IAW http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3041.txt

Depends on a new per record API (#2082). Moving to the same milestone.

Generally: Be careful about IPv6. Autoconfiguration and related standards are still evolving and often are not well supported.

Hello.

Based on a long discussion, FreeIPA team recently revised Goals and Assumptions of the DNS component in IPA/IdM:

Based on the information linked from that page, FreeIPA team decided that support for this feature directly does not really fit our direction and should be resolved in other way. I am therefore closing this request as WONTFIX.

Some related use-cases might be covered by ticket:4424.

Have a nice day.
