The ipausersearchfields and ipagroupsearchfields are multi-valued but they are shown as a single text field. It would be better to use a multi-valued text widget but this might require server-side changes.

What backend change is needed? These two fields are used as single-value comma-separated values.
Is it possible to change ipausersearchfields and ipagroupsearchfields to be a multi-valued attribute like ipauserobjectclasses? So instead of a single comma-separated value, the UI will get the values as an array. This might require schema change and data migration.
Possible but the amount of work to make this change isn't worth the effort IMHO.
You're right, this would require a schema change and data migration. I don't think these are used enough to justify the effort.
