#95 [Talk] How to eat an elephant: Introducing zchunk
Closed 5 years ago Opened 5 years ago by jdieter.

  1. What is your proposal?
Currently, downloading the Fedora repository metadata is akin to eating an elephant. Each time you check for updates, you download megabytes of data, most of it redundant since the last check.

Zchunk is a new compression format that will be used to split Fedora's metadata into bite-sized chunks, allowing you to download only the chunks that are different.

This session will introduce the zchunk format, explain how it works, how it differs from the alternatives, and how its design fits in with the dnf repository metadata. We will then look at what needs to happen for zchunk dnf metadata to become part of Fedora, and what other uses there might be for zchunk.

  2. Who needs to be in the room for this to succeed?
    • Jonathan Dieter (jdieter) - Presenter
    • Some of the dnf developers
    • Anyone with an interest in using zchunk in their project in Fedora
    • Anyone interested in helping develop zchunk

  3. Is this a…
    • 1 hour: Talk

  4. Anything else we need to know?
    • I just need a projector

  5. Who are you?
    • Name: Jonathan Dieter
    • FAS ID & IRC Nick: jdieter

Looks interesting!

I feel like this is probably better suited to being a talk rather than a workshop. if it is to be a workshop, should there be other people who need to be present in order to have it be successful?

My hope was that having it be a workshop would result in more people contributing to the code, but that may be a bit naive. I have never run a workshop before, so it really might be better as a talk.

After some more reflection, I've changed this to a talk. Thanks for the push in that direction.

The question

Who needs to be in the room for this to succeed?

was obviously poorly explained as basically no one answered this as we'd hoped — this was meant to ask who in addition to the speaker needs to be there. If the answer is really just Jonathan Dieter, you can do the talk from a broom closet in your own home. :)

Obviously I'm a bit slow. ;) I've updated that section, listing who I'd like to have there.

Awesome, thanks. And we're gonna word that more clearly next year. :)

I regret that we are unable to accept this talk this year. There will be lightning talk sessions and I encourage you to consider this option.
