#87 Fedora and Snaps: A two year retrospective and an exciting future!
Closed: Talk Scheduled 2 years ago Opened 2 years ago by ngompa.

What’s your proposal?

This is a proposal for a talk to present the evolution of snaps, how they progressed in Fedora, and interesting features coming soon.

Over the last two years, we've gone from having zero support for using snaps to having almost full runtime support. For this aspect, this will be a retrospective of how that happened, what went well, and what went poorly. We'll also talk about some of the interesting aspects of snaps and the challenges in supporting Fedora from an upstream perspective, and how we work closely with the upstream Snapcraft group to ensure Fedora is a top-tier supported platform.

Now that we have support for running snaps in Fedora, it's time to make the next logical leap: building Fedora-based snaps! We'll talk about what is going on upstream to enable this, and what we're doing within Fedora to make it possible so that anyone can build a snap using Fedora content and ship the latest and greatest software leveraging the Fedora ecosystem to be used on any distribution!

This will also include a short demo of a Fedora-based snap to show off the possibility.

Who needs to be in the room for this to succeed? List each person as Name (FAS ID)

  • Neal Gompa (@ngompa)
  • Zygmunt Krynicki (@zyga)
  • Anyone else interested in Fedora snaps!

Is this a …

  • Talk of 60 minutes

Anything else we need to know?

  • This involves a slide deck and a demo on a computer, so a projector is needed

Who are you?

  • Name: Neal Gompa
  • FAS ID: ngompa
  • IRC Nick: Conan_Kudo/Pharaoh_Atem/King_InuYasha/Son_Goku/Sir_Gallantmon

Anyone else interested in Fedora snaps!

Are there people who might not be interested per se but who need to be convinced in order for this to succceed? (Rel-eng, qa, etc?)

Well, the Fedora base snap is being developed under the auspices of the Server WG (cc: @sgallagh) primarily by @zyga and myself.

There's obviously going to be some rel-eng work involved to set up automated pushing of built snaps. In previous conversations, @mohanboddu expressed interest in assisting with that a bit, though again @zyga and myself are doing the primary work.

Probably QA for testing the snap, but I'm not sure what that would look like yet.

I would like to attend the talk. When we get to a place to ship snaps, this will help releng understand how we can to ship them.
