#389 [Talk-50] Behind supporting Fedora on the Framework Laptop - Ask Me Anything
Closed: Talk Scheduled 2 years ago by isagordillo. Opened 2 years ago by jaruga.

= Questions/Requested Information =

What is your proposal?

This talk is to spot-light Fedora people who have been contributing to support Fedora on the Framework Laptop[1].

The contributors are happy to present on how the collaboration between Fedora and Framework works, how they contributed to getting Fedora up-and-running on the Framework laptop, and what has been done since its initial launch with Fedora 34. We collect questions in advance, and we also collect questions, and answer in real-time.

Note there might be some questions that we cannot answer due to NDA. We are not sponsored.

== Speakers ==

Geoffrey Marr: Contributed to getting Fedora up-and-running on the Framework laptop since its initial launch with Fedora 34. He was mentioned on the Framework's official blog.[2]

Geoff Marr, Matthew Miller, and others at Fedora have been helping us get excellent support.

Kieran Levin[3]: At Framework Computer[1][5]. He has worked with Geoffrey together to make Fedora Linux work on the Framework Laptop.

Jun Aruga: Me. A Framework Laptop first generation batch 2 user, an active user on the Framework community forum[4], and an editor of the Framework Wikipedia page.[5] Note I haven't worked directly to support Fedora on the Framework Laptop. I just opened Bugzilla tickets, and communicated.

I'd really like to know more about what went into supporting Fedora Linux on this hardware. Would it be possible for you to bring in some of the folks who did the work to help present? Since this is a contributor conference, some of that "behind the scenes" information would be really beneficial.

Would it be possible for you to bring in some of the folks who did the work to help present?

Thanks for sharing the intent of the conference. I think the "bringing in some of the folks who did the work" is really a good idea. I also really want to see the "behind the scences". It helps for future Fedora people who want to work to support a vendor's hardware, to imagine how they can help.

Right now I am not sure if it is possible. But I know a few people who are working to support Fedora Linux on the Framework Laptop. So, I will contact them if it is possible first, and I will let you know here.

@bcotton I contacted Geoffrey Marr, one of the folks who supported or/and supporting Fedora Linux on this hardware. He is happy to join as a speaker. So, I adjusted the talk's title and proposal. Contributors talk is the main topic. I am very happy to be a moderator or catalyst of the talk.

Awesome! I'm really looking forward to this talk

@bcotton Yeah me too! The talk can go ahead with 2 speakers: Geoffrey and me. When can we know this talk is approved or not?

@bcotton We are planning to add 2 more people, people at Framework whom Geoffrey worked with together, as a speaker too. If they are happy to join as a speaker, can we change this talk's time to "50 Minute Talk"?

I'm just a reviewer, not the decision-maker, but I think that'd be fine.

I updated the first comment, changing the talk from "25 Minute Talk" to "50 Minute Talk", as Kieran Levin at Framework Computer, who has worked with Geoffrey, loves to join the talk.

Thank you for your submission and congratulations! Your proposed session has been accepted for Nest with Fedora.

I need to add you (and any additional speakers) as a speaker for the event and moderator for your session. We encourage speakers to personalize their title and avatar for their Hopin profile.

Please review the following guidance on using Hopin as a speaker and leave a comment if you have any questions.

On the day of your presentation, login to the event through the link above and go to the "Sessions" tab on the left hand side of the page. Your session will be visible under the "Sessions" tab for 10 minutes before and after the scheduled time. Click on your session and you should have full rights to moderate and present. Click on the "Share Audio & Video" button. Once you see yourself on screen, you're live to the audience.

You may want attendees to join you on screen to ask questions or interact. If so, you can see attendees asking to join at the bottom of the video in the Moderator Panel. You get to choose who comes up on screen with you there by clicking the "+" button on each request.

While unlikely, if you run into any technical difficulties during your session, please write in the Hopin chat what your issue is and message me through Hopins direct messaging feature. Another admin or myself should be able to resolve your issue within a few minutes. You can also take a look at Hopins Knowledge Center if you have questions about how the platform works or have any issues.

Please review the schedule draft for Nest with Fedora 2022 at the following Wiki link.

@riecatnor Sure. I will have other speakers confirm, and will let you know.
I have other questions. Which video meeting will be used? Who is responsible for recording this session?

Hi @jaruga we will be using the Hopin platform for Nest with Fedora. The sessions will be recorded automatically. We will edit them and put them up on Fedora's YouTube channel once they are done being processed.

@riecatnor OK. That's great! I don't need to worry about forgetting to push the recording button. :-) Can we use Hopin's Q&A feature in the session?
https://support.hopin.com/hc/en-us/articles/360057546752-How-to-use-Q-A-in-Hopin

Hi @jaruga yes you can use the hopin q&a feature in the session! You should have rights as moderators for the session. Can you ask Kieran to register for the event so I can add them as a speaker for the event and moderator for this session. Tagging the handle you provided for them didn't work or I would be pinging them directly :)

Thanks!

@riecatnor Okay. Thanks for the explanation!

OK. I will ask Kieran to do it. I am also asking if the proposed schedule is available for him. I am still waiting for the response.

@riecatnor Kieran told me that he registered on hopkin. Can you see it?

Confirm the scheduled date/time for your session works for you by replying on this ticket. If there are multiple speakers, please have each speaker confirm their availability for the scheduled session.

@riecatnor I also confirmed each speaker is available for the schedule session now. I think I told you everything I needed to tell you. If you have further questions, please let me know. Thanks.

@riecatnor Thanks for organizing the great event! I have questions for the recorded video.

  • Do you have a plan to upload the video to the Fedora's Youtube channel too? As I see the video is available only until November 6, 2022 on the Hopin, it's useful to watch it for a long time. Perhaps it might be better to trim the first and last part of the video when you upload it to Youtube, as I suppose that the actual part is maybe from around 0:08:50 to 1:16:40.
  • Can the company Framework use the video for their marketing use editing it?

For someone who are interested in watching the video.

I shared the detailed chapters of this recording video to help you to watch it on the web pages below. You can see "Recording" - "Chapters" there on one of the pages.

Thank you for presenting and for your participation at Nest with Fedora 2022! If you used slides for your presentation, please provide a public link to your slide deck or add it to the Nest with Fedora 2022 Schedule Wiki[0] page directly. Thank you!

Hi @isagordillo I added the link to our slide deck to the Nest with Fedora 2022 Schedule Wiki page directly. Note the slide deck was for only the introduction part of the talk session. In other parts of the talk session, we didn't use the slide deck.

@riecatnor @isagordillo Is it possible for you to upload this talk session's recording video to somewhere for everyone to watch it as a temporary workaround before you will upload the editing video to Fedora project's Youtube? You don't need to edit the video for now. Just the raw recording video. Because it seems that only people who registered Hopin before the Nest event can watch the recording on the Hopin site, and people at Framework want to share the video.

@jaruga If you go to the hopin (https://app.hopin.com/events/nest-with-fedora-2022/replay) you should be able to watch the unedited recordings in the replay section.

I know that I can watch the recording by myself, and I watched it. But it is because I registered the event in Hopin right? Now the event is closed. So, how can "everyone" (people not registered the event) watch the unedited recordings?

It seems the event organizer can at least download the recording.

https://support.hopin.com/hc/en-us/articles/360056080232-How-to-access-recordings
Click the Download button to download your video recordings as .mp4 files. You also have the option to rename each recording (maximum 300 characters) by clicking on the name of each one, or delete a recording by clicking on the trash can icon.

Could you download the recording of our talk session (link), and upload to a place such as Google Drive, or for everyone to access?

Hiya @jaruga- your enthusiasm is appreciated :) the team is working on getting the videos up on YouTube. It's standard for this process to take a bit after a conference is finished. Please be patient and we'll have it up as soon as possible!

OK. No problem. I will wait for it. :)
