Getting In The Zone: btrfs on SMR HDDs and NVMe ZNS SSDs

With the release of kernel 5.12, btrfs gained basic native support for host managed Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) HDDs. This initial support allows formatting and mounting an SMR HDD using btrfs (simple profile), therefore enabling high capacity storage at a lower cost while hiding the sequential write constraint of these devices. Work is also on-going to add support for high performance NVMe Zoned Namespace (ZNS) SSDs.

This talk will summarize btrfs zoned storage support status and discuss future improvement plans. In particular, we will present ideas for a de-clustered erasure coded volumes which will allow resolving the long standing btrfs RAID5/6 problems while enabling RAID (and erasure coded) volumes using zoned storage devices.

Hi @damien-lemoal - Thank you for your submission!

Your session has not been accepted in the first pass on creating the schedule. We are open to having this session at Nest, so if you would, please review the following Wiki link and let me know if there is a place you think it would fit in that works for your availability. The schedule will be locked by Friday July 30th. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Nest_with_Fedora_2021_Schedule

If you have further questions or need assistance, feel free to email mnordin@redhat.com or drop those inquiries on this ticket. Thanks!

Any open spot in Track 2 works. Johannes and I can accommodate any time on Thursday and Friday (preferably). But Saturday is OK too.

Thursday August 5th at 18:00-18:30 (UTC), Friday August 6th at 14:30-15:00 (UTC) or later would all work well.

Hi @damien-lemoal I added this session in on Friday, please review. Thanks!
