Venice is a bit expensive for transports, there are not private lines.
From the airport the price is about $ 8,50 and the amount is due both for people and for the baggage (in case of only one baggage the amount raise $ 17,00)
From the train station the amount is less than $ 2,00

Usually Flock happens in the same period, in the 2018 Guadec will be held in Almería - Spain
In Italy summer holidays cover two/three weeks and a lot of events and exhibitions take place in that period.

As social events we planned also some tours:

Not aware if there are any, but both Mestre and Venice are walkable on foot in about 30 minutes, and of course some vegetarian restaurant can be easily found and reached

How far is the venue from the city center? How far is the venue from the "social/hangout" area of town?

In about 10/20 minutes from Mestre to Venice, then in 30 minutes the San Marco place is reachable (also consider that Venice is one whole center).
