#994 document exception for kernel from normal updates policy
Closed None Opened 11 years ago by kevin.

I am 99% sure we granted an exception to the kernel for the normal updates policy.

Sadly, this was in the sea of updates discussions and never was properly documented.

If no one objects, can we add a section to the updates policy like:

The Linux kernel package has been granted an exception to this policy for the following reasons:

  • Manpower of kernel maintainers prevents us from easily backporting all the bug fixes, security fixes and new hardware enablement we would need to to older, no longer supported kernels.

  • Additionally, multiple kernels can be installed/booted, allowing users to boot older kernels in the event newer ones fail to work, and allowing time for kernel maintainers to fix any critical bugs in new kernels on older stable releases.

I'm also very sure we granted the kernel an exception when we drafted the policy, as well as the board updates vision. The kernel team has been following this practice for as long as I can remember, and we codified this a bit a while ago with this wiki page: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KernelRebases.

So I am +1 to adding the section Kevin suggests to make it clear.

I'm very sure the intent has always been to allow this, and the rationale is pretty strong, so +1 .

Thats 6, which is enough to pass.

I've added the exception to the page.
