I guess I am in favor of this as a feature, but I would prefer to have some more opinions from the maintainers of the various desktops, as they are who are going to be affected by this the most. CC'ing them.
I'm a little surprised we aren't already using autohinting. I remember when Bitstream landed a few years back there was some bruhaha about how the font looked bad in other OSes even though looked fine in ours because it lacked hinting and the autohinter saved it for us.
