#585 Plan date for dist-git branch renames
Closed None Opened 13 years ago by jkeating.

= Proposal topic =

I need fesco and releng to pick an appropriate date to have a 40~ minute outage of dist-git to rename the branches.

= Overview =

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Dist_Git_Branch_Proposal is the original proposal. Currently updates for fedora-packager (fedpkg) are in testing or stable that will handle both old style and new style branch names. It will also detect when the branches have been renamed and prompt for the use of fedpkg-fixbranches.py in order to fix local clones for the new branch names.

= Problem space =

Find an appropriate time to have the outage and make the conversion.

= Solution Overview =

The outage will require a couple things done.

1) run rebranch.py across all the git repos to rename the branches on pkgs.fedoraproject.org. This should take 35~ minutes.

2) Add a patched version of gitolite in that will find attempted commits to the old branch paths and prompt users to review a webpage about the branch naming change.

3) Update a status file on my fedorapeople.org page that fedpkg will read to detect if the branching has been done yet.

= Active Ingredients =

pkgs.fedoraproject.org
fedorapeople.org
fedora-packager (fedpkg)

Adding meeting keyword here.

From my point of view: this is a pretty short outage, so I think most anytime would work out fine. I'd like to see it happen next week sometime before the final F15 infrastructure freeze.

It was decided to do this on 2011-05-10.

This was done on 2011-05-10. ;)
