#3556 Change: ibus-speech-to-text WhisperCpp support
Closed: Accepted a month ago by zbyszek. Opened 2 months ago by alking.

ibus-speech-to-text 0.7.0 introduces support for OpenAI's Whisper engine via pywhispercpp (python bindings of WhisperCpp) in addition to the existing Vosk engine.

Owners, do not implement this work until the FESCo vote has explicitly ended.
The Fedora Program Manager will create a tracking bug in Bugzilla for this Change, which is your indication to proceed. See the FESCo ticket policy and the Changes policy for more information.

REMINDER: This ticket is for FESCo members to vote on the proposal. Further discussion should happen in the Discourse discussion linked above. Additional discussion may happen on the Fedora Devel mailing list.

Fixed the issue title ...

There were some important questions raised in the discussion thread: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/f44-change-proposal-ibus-speech-to-text-pywhispercpp-selfcontained/179397/4. Procedural -1 to prevent approval before this is resolved.

This will be discussed in the FESCo meeting on 2026-01-27 or 2026-02-03, depending on whether quorum is reached.

Added some questions to the Fedora Discussions thread from the FESCo meeting today:
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/179397/10

I'm withdrawing my procedural -1 to clear the slate.

Let's discuss this during the meeting today (18:00 GMT in https://matrix.to/#/#meeting:fedoraproject.org). I think we might want to make a recommendation to package at least one smaller model to make the UX better.

This was discussed during the meeting today:
APPROVED (+5, 1, -0): Change is approved. FESCo recommends that at least one small useful model is packaged.
