The gnome desktop live media is now targeting 1GB USB media. They announced it on the desktop list at the start of the cycle (and possibly on devel list as well.. I don't recall). But this came as a surprise to quite a few testers of the alpha release.
We should have a short feature page for this to make people aware of the change. Hopefully with a feature page we would not only get release notes coverage but also a mention when reporters do reviews of Fedora. The more widely the change is disseminated, the fewer surprised users we'll have when F-13 comes out.
Also, the design team or website team should be asked if it's desirable for get.fedoraproject.org to somehow show the users who want cd live media that that choice still exists if you use other spins. CC'ing mizmo for her input.

That's excellent. Paul, do you think that having an actual Feature page is helpful for getting members of the press to write about the change?
I think we need to know who the users of the live media are. It was just suggested in IRC that ambassadors said the live CD media is preferable for users in particular countries/areas. I don't know where those countries are or what areas so it's difficult to understand the need for live CD. Live CD's are really unbearable to use as a desktop and I believe are primarily used for installation.
The website redesign plan for get.fpo has a 'by format' tab that lists out the cds by format, so there will be a 'live media' section there that could highlight those that are cds and those that are not? https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Website_redesign_2009/Mockups/Get.fpo#More_Options_Download_Tab:_Formats
This feature was approved.
Please finish cleaning up the page and get it added to the right categories, etc.
Will leave this ticket to track that being completed.
Replying to [comment:4 duffy]:
I am a frequent user of live media, but my case may be an outlier. I use it to test upcoming versions, so the ability to apply updates on a LiveUSB is critical. For me a readonly media is generally much less useful.
However, on occasion I have also used the LiveCD to install on older machines with tempermental video and often a CD rather than a DVD. Booting the LiveCD, seeing that things work reasonably well, and then doing the install to disk is a simpler and less error-prone process than the DVD or network install.
I have used DVDs in the past to give people something they can use later. For example I handed out about a dozen customized Games Spin DVDs last summer at a boardgaming tournament. For friends and family I gave out about 10 8GB USB drives for Christmas. However, booting off USB drives are still not consistently supported unless you know people have very new computers. These are too expensive to hand out on a larger scale.
I do agree that using Live CDs or DVDs for an actual desktop is not practical. The high seek time of that media makes it really slow. They are useful for testing hardware support, demoing and installing.

needs to be finished up.
Concerns about the size target here should be taken to the desktop folks...
This was reverted for F13.
Clarification with Nirik on IRC--for Fedora 13, live images will remain CD sized and as a result this feature pages is not applicable to Fedora 13.
