#341 provenpackager request - chkr

= Qualifications =

My packaging experience started ca. 10 years ago when I've started to maintain a small private rpm-base linux distribution together with a co-worker. I'm using Fedora since FC 5 and since this time I always packaged some missing bits and pieces. In the company I'm working for all developer PCs are running Fedora and so I have a vital interest to help to keep and increase the quality of Fedora.

Since the beginning of 2009 I've started to actively working as a packager for Fedora.

I'm currently (co)-maintaining [https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/users/packages/chkr 23 packages] and I've done (and do) approx. the same amount of reviews ([https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&classification=Fedora&product=Fedora&component=Package%20Review&bug_status=CLOSED&emailassigned_to1=1&emailtype1=substring&email1=chkr%40plauener.de done] / [https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&classification=Fedora&product=Fedora&component=Package%20Review&bug_status=ASSIGNED&emailassigned_to1=1&emailtype1=substring&email1=chkr%40plauener.de open]) so far.

My goal in Fedora is to provide a good quality of the maintained
packages to the users. This includes adequate responses to bug
reports and to work actively with upstream to get the issues finally fixed.

I am an active member of the Mono SIG.

= Rationale =

The main purpose for requesting the provenpackager privileges is to
be able to make good progress in fixing various kinds of problems
in the mono area:

  • user-reported bugs in the applications (f-spot, banshee, monodevelop)

  • generic cleanup (correct dependencies, ensure that application packages use the adequate system libraries and local copies, etc. )

  • redesign the current way of packaging x86_64 mono packages since Fedora took a quite unusual way which often collides with upstream (discussion needed with FPC, though)

Quite a lot libraries in the mono environment are not as stable and mature as it is the case for the rest of a linux system and so fixing bugs is often blocked by syncing all maintainers to fix a specific problem.

As a recent example: to fix a crash in banshee [https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=526132 BZ 526132] three packages
must be updated (banshee, mono-zeroconf, ndesk-dbus).

For sure this will not substitute an open communication on the fedora-mono mailing list but it will help to get problems solved in time.

Additionally it will allow me to fix minor (packaging) issues of other packages in Fedora if the maintainers agree.

Forwarded on to the sponsors list for feedback.
Will discuss at the next meeting.
