#338 Proposal: postpone ChangeInImplicitDSOLinking feature to F14 and revert its implementation from pre-branch Rawhide
Closed None Opened 14 years ago by kkofler.

= Proposal topic =

The feature [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/ChangeInImplicitDSOLinking] should be reverted from F13 and postponed to F14 due to the massive fallout it is causing the day of the feature freeze.

= Overview =

The feature [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/ChangeInImplicitDSOLinking], a build system change affecting the entire distribution, was rushed into F13 the day of the feature freeze. This is causing hundreds of packages to FTBFS [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DSOLinkBugs] and gives affected maintainers little to no time to fix this issue before the Alpha. It also impedes the building of critical fixes such as this !NetworkManager change [https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=541353] which is on the F13Blocker-KDE tracker, forcing us to fix unrelated issues at the same time.

My proposal is to:
* postpone this feature to Fedora 14
* revert this change in F13 and reinstate it in Rawhide only after the branching

(I would also urge reconsidering the feature approval entirely, but right now my biggest concern is the impact on the F13 release.)

= Problem space =

Almost 300 new FTBFS bugs the day of the F13 feature freeze.

= Solution Overview =

Revert the offending toolchain changes until after F13 branches (so as to only target F14) and update the feature page accordingly.

= Active Ingredients =

  • Toolchain maintainers will have to accept that this change will not go into F13.
  • Package maintainers will not be forced to fix their packages for F13 and will instead have the whole F14 release cycle to fix the problems.
