#3244 Change: Retire Python 2.7
Closed: Accepted 6 months ago by zbyszek. Opened 6 months ago by amoloney.

The python2.7 package will be retired without replacement from Fedora Linux 41. There will be no Python 2 in Fedora 41+ other than PyPy. Packages requiring python2.7 on runtime or buildtime will have to deal with the retirement or be retired as well.

Owners, do not implement this work until the FESCo vote has explicitly ended.
The Fedora Program Manager will create a tracking bug in Bugzilla for this Change, which is your indication to proceed.
See the FESCo ticket policy and the Changes policy for more information.

REMINDER: This ticket is for FESCo members to vote on the proposal. Further discussion should happen in the devel list thread linked above.

I don't think remove gimp 2 without testing gimp 3 is a good idea

As I've said elsewhere, if we want to keep GIMP 2 in the distro, it should move to a Flatpak. We need to be rid of Python 2.

It's not not being tested. You can (and should) install gimp3 on F40 right now and test it. The last time I tried, it was a bit crashy, certainly not ready for prime-time. But we have still a few months to improve it. We can either drop both python2 and gimp2 as rpms now, or keep them both working for the duration of F41, i.e. another 15 months. We don't want to commit to the latter, so the former is the only option left.

There's already a gimp 2 flatpak on flathub... so that would be an option for users that really need 2 I suppose.
