Owners, do not implement this work until the FESCo vote has explicitly ended. The Fedora Program Manager will create a tracking bug in Bugzilla for this Change, which is your indication to proceed. See the FESCo ticket policy and the Changes policy for more information.
REMINDER: This ticket is for FESCo members to vote on the proposal. Further discussion should happen in the devel list thread linked above.
The community feedback has been almost universally negative against the proposal as-is, and with Python 2 also being proposed to be dropped this cycle, I'm not sure this complexity is worth it.

This being a dependency for the Python 2 retirement, I worry about it not being approved. Do you oppose updating to GIMP 3, or do you oppose the gimp3 package idea?
The issue is with adding this as a new package gimp3 rather than replacing and retiring gimp (which is v2).
gimp3
gimp
I agree with @ngompa here: let's not keep GIMP 2 around; it's blocking the Python 2 removal.
-1 to the proposal as written.
The latter. Updating gimp to 3.x is perfectly fine and what I (and others) want to see.
Yeah. I appreciate the effort that was put into allowing two parallel versions of gimp to be installed. It would have made the transition easier for some users. But when Python2.7 is removed, old gimp will become FTBFS, so the approach described in this Change Proposal is not feasible.
@nphilipp can you rework the proposal just update gimp to v3?
The effort to make the packages parallel-installable isn't wasted, though, since that is still valuable for stable branches. But for Fedora 41+, I think gimp should just become GIMP 3.
This was discussed in today's meeting:

I will rework the proposal accordingly – I planned to do this following the developments in the discussion on Discourse anyway, just didn’t get around to it.
@nphilipp update?
@nphilipp ping
Sorry for the late response, I didn’t get around to this earlier.
I’ve updated the proposal, in summary: No compat package for GIMP 2.x in F41+, the old version will be dropped from the distro regardless of if an RC is available in time, in order to enable retiring Python 2.7.
The release notes section does not seem to be updated for this Change that (as I read it) describes gimp being upgraded to v3 for F41.
Good catch, thanks! I’ll update it.

+1, with one minor change requested: please update the Release Notes section of the Change to make it clear that existing GIMP v2 plugins may not work with v3.
👍 Done.
Hmm. Scope has this content:
Ensure users of gimp get the new version when upgrading their OS to Fedora Linux 41. Ensure comps is updated to refer to the new GIMP version from Fedora Linux 41 on.
I think this makes the whole situation overly complicated. Just build gimp package from gimp3 repo. This will make upgrades work automatically and obviate the need to adjust comps. We do not want to forever carry "3" in the package name that is visible to users. (Especially if there ever is gimp 4.)
+1 nonetheless
… or even update the original gimp dist-git repo to version 3 and retire the gimp3 repo.
I would expect gimp to just get updated and gimp3 to be retired.
…
I’ve updated the proposal accordingly.
