KDE Plasma 6 is successor to KDE Plasma 5 created by the KDE Community. It is based on Qt 6 and KDE Frameworks 6 and brings many changes and improvements over previous versions. For Fedora Linux, the transition to KDE Plasma 6 will also include dropping support for the X11 session entirely, leaving only Plasma Wayland as the sole offered desktop mode.
Owners, do not implement this work until the FESCo vote has explicitly ended. The Fedora Program Manager will create a tracking bug in Bugzilla for this Change, which is your indication to proceed. See the FESCo ticket policy and the Changes policy for more information.
REMINDER: This ticket is for FESCo members to vote on the proposal. Further discussion should happen in the devel list thread linked above.
+1
I see that the Change Owners are adamant about dropping support for X11. As discussed in the discussion thread, I think leaving it as an option, even without official support, would make some users happy. But I also understand why you want to only offer one option. The second option would create additional complexity and choices and maintenance costs, even if only to figure out what the user is actually running. So I think it's OK to try it as proposed. If there is pushback and issues are found, we can always add back the subpackages for X11.
I'm +1, but it might be nice if the contingency plan also did mention possibly enabling the X11 session if it was found to be needed before beta. Wholesale revert of 6 seems... wrong for issues where users just need the X11 session. Of course we hope thats not needed, but it might be an option if needed over just a complete revert.
For what it's worth, we don't have any tested mode that falls back to X11 on the KDE spin or Kinoite today. The last of that was dropped during Fedora Linux 38 development.
I wasn't thinking a fallback, I was thinking for users that have some blocker issue requiring then to select a X11 session, instead of reverting all the way back to 5, we could simply add a x11 session for a while to 6, but we can I suppose deal with that bridge if we ever come to it.
This is now approved with 6 +1 after one week.
