#3069 Hold your horses (Xorg session removal in Gnome, Vesa drivers removal from Xorg)
Closed: Invalid 8 months ago by name. Opened 8 months ago by name.

The recent developments in Fedora are quite concerning.

Imagine the following two scenarios:

1) There's a kernel update which completely breaks your native GPU driver, so you need to boot with nomodeset.

2) In the future you try to use an old Fedora release, it again won't boot into graphics mode because it doesn't yet support your new HW.

3) Two months ago I bought a new laptop (for the first time in 8 years) and Fedora installation media did not support its GPU. I can easily imagine Fedora starting to require/use Wayland for installation. What does that mean? It means you won't be able to use graphics installation mode (is there anything else? AFAIK there's been no text installation mode ever) to install Fedora at all. Is Fedora set on losing customers?

In both these cases most Wayland compositors will fail to work at all while Xorg could have used the Vesa driver and allowed you to sort out any issues, install or update the system, etc. etc. etc.

I feel like Fedora is shooting itself in the foot by pursuing the deprecation and removal of anything Xorg related.

Yes, it's barely maintained but it offers safe graphics mode in situations when everything else fails.

I don't know if Fedora's Fesco is the appropriate place to voice my concerns but I don't know any other ways of getting in touch with the people who steer the development of the distro.

Since Fedora 36, it's been possible to use Wayland with the basic EFI/VESA mode, and our basic graphics mode option (nomodeset) already uses that.

That's the SimpleDRM feature: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/ReplaceFbdevDrivers

Both Fedora Workstation and Fedora KDE already use this for fallback, Xorg isn't involved in the fallback graphics modes at all. If you were able to successfully install with nomodeset, you still were going through Wayland.

Thanks a ton for the clarification.
