#2689 F36 Change: Replace the fbdev drivers with simpledrm and the DRM fbdev emulation layer
Closed: Accepted 2 years ago by sgallagh. Opened 2 years ago by bcotton.

This change replaces the legacy Linux frame buffer device (fbdev) drivers that are still used in Fedora, with the latest simpledrm driver and the DRM fbdev emulation layer.

+1 with the proviso that we get "basic graphics mode" working through simpledrm instead of turning off DRM and KMS entirely. In doing so, that will remove the remaining blocker to eliminating the X11 session from release-blocking desktop criteria (GNOME and KDE Plasma).

@javierm has been doing work on this front upstream, so I would prefer to condition acceptance on this being completed.

+1 without the above proviso; this change is an improvement regardless of the state of DRM and KMS. I'd certainly like to have this ready in time, but I wouldn't want to block on it.

+1 here, definitely working in the right direction...

+1, even without the proviso

+1, even without the proviso

My understanding is that without this, nomodeset is completely broken and won't work at all (since that relies on fbdev, which is being disabled), so our basic graphics mode option will just fail without something to replace it.
