#1983 F30 System-Wide Change: Remove the Group: Tag From All Packages
Closed: Accepted 5 years ago Opened 5 years ago by bcotton.

Remove the Group: tag from over 9000 source packages.

I'm going to vote 0 here. The Change as proposed doesn't seem harmful, but I'd much rather see Fedora get closer in line to other distributions' use of this tag rather than wiping it out completely.

Should we put it on the agenda for Monday's meeting, or do you want to
just see how the other votes go?

A vote of 0 differs from a -1 vote in that regard. It basically means I'm willing to accept the majority decision.

+1

My reasoning: as written in the Change page, the tag is poorly defined, with the majority of packages falling into a some very broad categories, and it not used for anything if present (at least I have never heard of any actual use case). Hence, even though it is a small thing, let's get rid of it to make spec files a bit simpler and cleaner.

I don't think compatibility with other distributions matters here — I rather see this as yet another case where Fedora leads the pack.

IMO, I think we've fallen behind in this regard, but we could go back and forth on this forever. There are a few tools that do use the Group tag in Fedora for sorting packages, but it's somewhat uncommon nowadays since the destruction of most GUIs for package management in Fedora.

(For example, dnfdragora [though not by default in Fedora], synaptic, smart, repoview, and a few others use Group tag to organize packages for viewing and searching).

IMHO the packaging guidelines should be updated to "must not use Group tag" since "should not" still allows it to be present. Other than that, I am +1 for this proposal. If we ever want to make the group tag useful again, it might still make sense to start from scratch or the tags could be retrieved from the GIT history if it is considered to be useful.

While I think we've got more important work to do than worry about the Group tag in packages, I'm +1 for the change.

It's been a week and I count +5.
