#1715 F27 System Wide Change: Rsyslog log format change proposal
Closed 6 years ago Opened 6 years ago by jkurik.

I would like to ask FESCo to review this Change proposal:

Currently Fedora uses RSYSLOG_TraditionalFileFormat as a default format for timestamps in its logs. There is missing year and timezone. This proposal aims to change this by adopting ISO 8601 and RFC 3339 compliant timestamp format known as RSYSLOG_FileFormat instead of current RSYSLOG_TraditionalFileFormat.

2017-06-09 FESCo Meeting

* AGREED: FESCo requests that the Change owners update the proposal
    with a much more detailed "Benefit to Fedora" section as well as
    clearly identifying affected packages and processes that would need
    to be updated if the change occurs. (+1:5, -1:0, +0:0)

2017-06-16 FESCo Meeting

  * AGREED: FESCo asks that in the next week we get some of the benefits
    to fedora and our users laid out in the change, an outline of docs
    on how to manage things, and a commitment to help resolve conflicts
    and problems as they come up in the transistion (+1:5, -1:0, +0:0)

Any update on this issue for today's FESCo meeting?

I was checking logcheck and it will break it, because it is basically collection of regexps, lot of them looks like:

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ su\[[0-9]+\]: pam_authenticate: Authentication failure$

So ti depends on precise log format including timestamp format.

BTW logcheck is broken anyway, just composing mails on this + lot of work I am paid for.

@rsroka FYI

@jsmith, @kevin thanks for info

  • AGREED: FESCo Rejects F27 System Wide Change: Rsyslog log format
    change (+1:5, +0:0, -1:0) (maxamillion, 16:30:58)
