#1684 Consider `cfq` and `deadline` schedulers
Closed: Insufficient data 6 years ago Opened 7 years ago by sgallagh.

A few weeks ago, there was a thread on the Workstation list about changing the default kernel scheduler.

Today at the Workstation WG meeting, I was asked to bring this discussion to FESCo so we can answer some of the following questions:

  • What should be the default scheduler for The Fedora Project (including spins and non-Edition content)?
  • Do we want to make any requirements on user experience (dconf, Cockpit, etc.) for how to change the defaults for specific loads?

@pfrields, @mclasen, @catanzaro

I'm not super excited about trying to change the default. As Josh echoed in the e-mail thread, trying to find a default that works for everyone is difficult. The first step should be choosing specific workloads to benchmark so we can make an informed decision.

Asking the folks from Workstation here: What are some specific workloads to test that demonstrate the gain for 'deadline' scheduling?

Asking everyone: Is there a built-in systemd or other timer capability that we can use to give us benchmark data? I'm not familiar with the mechanics here.

Was there anything for FESCo to do here? Or did we want to leave that up to kernel maintainers based on any compelling benchmarks from workstation group?

Any update from anyone here? Should this be on a future FESCo meeting agenda?

How many folks are using Fedora with mechanical drives? I've had issues with i/o responsiveness on Fedora for multiple years at this point. If i'm dnf installing anything then I just stop trying to open up any new windows or terminal panes.

Have any of the other distros collected usable data for common desktop workloads? I know this isn't workstation, so maybe it's the wrong place for this comment?

I guess it's a partly a case of lack of proper expectations. I have no idea how much I can expect from these drives.
