#1099 Postpone inheritance cut-off to Alpha Freeze
Closed None Opened 11 years ago by vondruch.

In #1005, it was agreed, that an inheritance between rawhide and stable branch will be cut-off at branching time. It was mainly proposed due to existence of "updates-testing", which is not in play as long as Bodhi is not in the game. Could you please re-evaluate/clarify the decision and postpone the inheritance cut-off until Bodhi is in place, i.e. until Alpha Freeze? Thank you

-1. Inheritance an unnatural way to do branching, problematic in face of ABI changes, and overall inconsistent.

I agree with Mirek, that the inheritance cutoff at the point of branch time is on the right spot.

So -1 to the proposal.

-1. If we wanted to keep rawhide and branched in perfect sync until alpha freeze, we should branch at alpha freeze.

Perfect sync is your words. Branch allows to develop on Rawhide while stabilizing stable. Inheritance during that period allows to be effective in fixing bugs which are in stable as well in Rawhide.

Also note that I proposed that the Bodhi would tag the builds into Rawhide as replacement for inheritance, which was considered interesting idea, which is not yet implemented. But may be my thinking was way too optimistic.

-1 here as well.

Posponing this doesn't help us any. Better to break it now and get all maintainers realizing their normal workflow should be to build in rawhide first, then branched.
