#62 RFE: Add an option to perform a minimal workstation install
Closed: Won't fix 4 years ago by chrismurphy. Opened 5 years ago by augenauf.

I had to install Ubuntu in a VM recently (after not having done so in a quite a while), and I was happily surprised that the installer offers an option to install a minimal version of the Desktop. Now, this is not a minimal install (without DE) but it is a minimal Gnome desktop that does not come with the large number of preinstalled apps (that one may not use but install easily if needed later).

Would that be an option Fedora would consider for their Workstation edition?

I don't think we want to add options to the installer

Thank you for your reply @mclasen. I am wondering why you think you don't want to add that option. Simplicity of the UI, demand, feasibility, ...?

Also, I am referring to a single option, not options.

I am curious to learn why the Workstation WG does not consider this an improvement to Fedora Workstation.

Every option is bifurcating the user base. Now I need to ask in each bug report: is this a minimal install, or a 'normal' one ?

Its a trade-off, and I come down on considering the cost not worth the benefit for this one.

OK, thanks for clarifying. I just had the impression removing all the unwanted apps is more likely to get you in dependency trouble than the other way around. But that's fine. Issue can be closed.

I'm going to close this as won't fix. I think members of the Workstation working group are sensitive to the Live image getting too big, and will continue to keep it under consideration.
