#59 firefox-wayland desktop file
Closed a year ago Opened a year ago by stransky.

Firefox rpm package provides an extra firefox-wayland.desktop file to run Firefox on Wayland backend. I was told [1] it's a wrong approach as all new desktop files has to be approved by Workstation group.

I created the desktop file (and not a desktop file action) as I want ability to register the Wayland browser at Settings/Default applications.

My inclination would be to request that this be moved to a subpackage, since testing experimental technology is not interesting for most Fedora users and we surely do not expect users to understand what Wayland is. If it's subpackaged so that the desktop launcher is opt-in, then it would not require any Working Group approval.

Hey Martin, we discussed this at the Working Group meeting today. The WG is unanimous that we'd prefer only one Firefox desktop launcher to be installed by default (+5,0,-0). You could either:

  • Create a firefox-wayland subpackage to contain the new desktop file. That way, users who want to test the Wayland version can be instructed to simply install that subpackage.
  • Or just remove the desktop file

Thanks!

The firefox-wayland package has been created for firefox-61.0 - https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=1095821

I think this is implemented. Thanks, @stransky!
