#53 Replace plymouth theme
Closed: Fixed 5 years ago by catanzaro. Opened 5 years ago by catanzaro.

Currently we use the Charge plymouth theme, showcasing the Fedora logo. To be blunt, it doesn't look very great. The default upstream theme, Spinner, is much nicer. Fedora would leave a stronger first impression if we were to switch to Spinner. But Spinner doesn't showcase the Fedora logo.

Since we've seen no progress on creating a new theme for Fedora, I suggest we switch to the upstream Spinner theme. This is important for creating a sense of Fedora being a high-quality, professionally-developed, polished product.

Alternatively, if Fedora design is interested in creating a new plymouth theme that includes the Fedora logo, we could wait a year or so to see if that materializes. I just don't want to stick with Charge forever when there is no new theme in development. (If we create a new theme, my request would be to use the same gray noise background as the Spinner theme, which transitions nicely to the gray background of our login screen, and is matched by our yet-to-materialize designs for the GRUB theme.)

I don't really think it makes much sense to just replace the plymouth theme as an isolated change.
This should be coordinated with the changes we do to the boot loader (BLS) and the coming login screen refresh.

OK, I've removed the meeting tag, then, to give more time for that other work to materialize. I knew about the login screen refresh, but not about any planned bootloader work.

@mclasen, @aday, is there any status update on this?

Hans has been working on boot experience. @aruiz might be able to fill us in.

Hans's work does not extend to rewriting the plymouth theme.

I just booted elementary OS, and I'm flatly embarrassed how much better their plymouth theme is than ours.

Since there's been no progress on this, I propose to immediately switch to the spinner theme for F30. That gives one more release cycle for any parties interested in writing an improved Fedora theme to do so. I'd love to have a slick Fedora theme when booting. But the spinner theme is clearly way better than the status quo. Instead of continuing to wait for a theme that shows no signs of writing itself, let's switch to spinner.

It would certainly be better if this were part of a more comprehensive review and set of design changes. That said, the Plymouth theme has been an embarrassment for many years, so I'd be in favour of any improvement, and agree that the spinner theme would be better.

Despite earlier comments here that my flickerfree work would not extend to updating the plymouth theme, in the end it did extend to doing exactly that.

Not only do we have a nice new spinner based theme (with some subtle branding) now, we also have a much nicer offline-updates look now, see:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/OS/BootProgress

And here are some screenshots of this in action:
https://fedorapeople.org/~jwrdegoede/flickerfree-videos/boot.png
https://fedorapeople.org/~jwrdegoede/flickerfree-videos/installing.png

This will be available in rawhide starting with plymouth-0.9.4-3.fc30 which should show in tomorrows compose.

As such I believe that this issue can be closed now.
