#466 Fedora SilverBlue: Problem with Codecs and Dependencies
Opened 3 months ago by linuxkernel94. Modified 2 months ago

Fedora SilverBlue has a critical issue with codecs, affecting Kdenlive and OBS.

• Required dependencies not available in default repositories
• Fedora Flatpak packages lack widely-used codecs

Proposed Solution when the user enable Third-Pary Repos and an extra switch to enable codecs:

  1. Layer the necessary dependencies (ffmpegthumbnailer, libavcodec-freeworld and rpmfusion-free-release) to Fedora SilverBlue.

  2. Replace Fedora Flatpak packages with Fedora Flathub packages such as Kdenlive and OBS, which include widely-used codecs.

Priority: HIgh

This issue affects many users who rely on applications such as Kdenlive and OBS for video editing. Resolving it improves the user experience and makes Fedora SilverBlue a more viable option for content creators.

If reporting issues against Silverblue or Kionite (atomic desktops in general as this issue isn't Silverblue specific) please use https://gitlab.com/fedora/ostree/sig/-/issues/ instead. This issue tracker is only used for Fedora Workstation (the regular one, not the atomic one).

As I mentioned here we can only help with H.264. Everything else will have to be handled by third parties elsewhere, without assistance from Fedora.

Supporting H.264 in Fedora Flatpak is relevant to Fedora Workstation, not just Silverblue, because Fedora Flatpaks are currently the default source of applications in Fedora Workstation.

Note that the low penetration of HEVC (due to complicated patent situation) and VC-1 (due to its use only in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray) means that outside of H.264, Fedora ships all widely used codecs on the web. Cisco provides us basic H.264 support, which gives us plenty of coverage here.

Hi, I'm happy to go with openh264

Do you know if it has been fixed for the upcoming release?

Right now, Silverblue 41 does not have support for it by default. I couldn't find any issues opened, but I did notice that 'noopenh264' received some updates.

This package previously caused a lot of trouble on Silverblue and does not provide support for Fedora 41.
