#408 Several backgrounds from gnome-backgrounds are missing
Closed: Fixed 3 months ago by catanzaro. Opened 4 months ago by ananas-comosus.

I'm using Fedora 39 with GNOME 45 and several backgrounds from this release of GNOME are missing: Amber, Design is rounded rectangles and Fold are some examples.

These backgrounds are really nice. Why Fedora doesn't include them? Is that intentional?

They're provided by gnome-backgrounds-extras. Looks like @amigadave has decided that some of the wallpapers get installed by default and others go into -extras. I'm not sure why, but I'd guess it's probably mostly arbitrary?

@aday @amigadave can you comment on this one please?

I don't remember all of the history, but for many years Fedora has only shipped a subset of gnome-backgrounds. The last time we revisited this was around a year ago, when we refreshed the Fedora wallpapers, but stuck with the approach of only including a subset of the GNOME wallpapers.

I think that the current situation is probably a result of a combination of:

  1. a desire to have some unique Fedora wallpapers (as a branding thing and a way of adding value)
  2. constraints around the number of wallpapers we can include by default (both in terms of install media size and GNOME's relatively basic wallpaper selection UI)

Perhaps it would be good to re-examine those constraints.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the current optional Fedora wallpapers. I also think that the excluded gnome-wallpapers are great, and would like to include them.

In F39 on my system the disk sizes are:

  • Default Fedora wallpaper: 15.4 MB (1 wallpaper, png)
  • Fedora optional wallpapers: 5.2 MB (6 wallpapers, all webp)
  • GNOME optional wallpapers: 13.1 MB (6 wallpapers, a mix of svg and jpg)

All of these wallpapers are 2 images - one for light and one for dark. Total size is 33.8 MB.

constraints around the number of wallpapers we can include by default (both in terms of install media size and GNOME's relatively basic wallpaper selection UI)

Design work to address this is current happening here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/settings-mockups/-/issues/62

Actually I think this issue is basically a duplicate of #278. The wallpapers reported as missing here are intentionally not included. We should reconsider that in #278. Pagure doesn't seem to have a way to close issues as duplicates and all possible resolution statuses are inappropriate, so I'll just pick "Fixed" for this even though we haven't done anything yet.
