#345 Enable tap-to-click in GDM
Closed: Deferred to upstream a year ago by catanzaro. Opened a year ago by cereal-lava-planet.

Currently, GNOME doesn't let you use the tap-to-click feature of touchpads in GDM: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/695

This can be very frustrating, specially for new users. Also, touchpad buttons from some laptop models sink after years of use, making them harder to press.

Since this feature is still not available upstream, I think a downstream change could happen to mitigate this issue.

Want to chime in here, @rstrode?

It's the same annoying issue as with all other desktop settings, e.g. the 12/24 hour clock format preference. Users expect to be able to change login screen settings same as user settings, but there's no easy way to do it currently. Advanced users can set a password for the gdm user, log in, and run gsettings, but nobody is going to think to do that unless you already know the trick.

You should have login manager preferences exposed in GNOME Settings. It's really annoying that they aren't there.

Or if you're not going to expose them, at least have GDM use the settings for a user when you select them.

Basically we need Settings to have a way to change login screen settings for all settings that users might want to change. There are potentially many settings that are relevant there. Another common complaints, besides tap-to-click and the 12/24 clock format, is suspend behavior.

But what if a user disables tap-to-click and another one enables it?

Hi @aday , I believe you proposed some upstream design changes aimed at resolving this class of problems. Could you post a link to that, please?

That would be gnome-control-center#2185. gdm#827 is also related.

OK, great, thanks. I see the design allows the system administrator to choose a user whose settings will be used for the login screen. Presumably that's not needed on single-user systems. It makes sense to me. With upstream design proposals in place, I think we track things upstream instead of here going forward.

Makes sense for the tap to click setting. I'm more concerned about the lack of support for input source configuration in gdm - that seems pretty serious.

Feel free to report a new issue to track this if desired.
