#339 New tool needed for agendas and notes
Closed: Fixed a year ago by aday. Opened a year ago by aday.

The working group has been using etherpad.gnome.org to write its agendas and notes. This service is due to be retired on 1 December, so we need to choose an alternative.

So far the options seem to be:

  • Hackmd.io - proprietary, used by a few other Fedora teams (Websites, Diversity)
  • hedgedoc.gnome.org - open source, hosted by GNOME, requires a GNOME account

Are there any others to consider? Any preferences for one of these options?

Looks like Hackmd.io requires an email address. I don't want to sign up for that.

I do have a GNOME account, but I suspect many of us do not. Not really a good thing to require for taking meeting minutes.

The path of least resistance would probably be to switch to another public Etherpad instance. There are many.

openSUSE hosts a public etherpad instance that anyone can use: https://etherpad.opensuse.org/

As a member of the openSUSE Heroes team, I can say we're okay with Fedora folks using it. Heck, the CentOS and EPEL folks use the openSUSE Jitsi with our blessing too.

openSUSE's Etherpad sounds like an excellent option.

both works for me, but maybe move to Gnomes hedgedoc instance as i like an open source solution instead of a closed source one (but maybe Hackmd is better as everyone can help write then as it does not need a GNOME account)

In order of preference: openSUSE Etherpad, hedgedoc.gnome.org, hackmd.io

Note that only GNOME Foundation members have GNOME accounts these days, so most of us can't log into GNOME HedgeDoc.

It seems like the openSUSE Etherpad instance is the way to go, but I've put this on the agenda for next week, to check with people.

This is not true, but you do require substantial contributions to GNOME. Most WG members will not be able to access GNOME HedgeDoc. It does not seem suitable.

Hmm, might be mixing this up with something else about GNOME accounts? Maybe email and matrix accounts?

Right, email accounts have always been restricted to Foundation members, and Matrix accounts are now too.

We discussed this issue during today's meeting. The consensus seems to be to move to the openSUSE etherpad. I'll do that for the next meeting.
