#280 Identify developer tools that we want to feature on the website
Closed: Fixed 2 years ago by aday. Opened 2 years ago by aday.

A new web page is currently being worked on for Workstation. One of the things we wanted to do there was highlight some of the developer tools and frameworks that are on offer.

Can we come up with a list? What we're looking for, I think, are tools which are readily available, sought after, and have some current relevance.

Ideas we generated for this during yesterday's WG call:

  • Toolbx
  • GNOME Boxes
  • Podman
  • GNOME Builder
  • PipeWire / GStreamer
  • PyCharm (available through the 3rd party repos)

Although, I have to say that some of these aren't exactly what i had in mind for the web page - I think we're looking for tools and frameworks that already have mindshare, particularly amongst those coming from other platforms.

That's not to say that we shouldn't talk about Boxes/Toolbx/Pipewire. It's more that those technologies require a bit more selling and explanation, as opposed to a simple name drop.

Technologies that i had hoped to be able to mention include:

  • Tensorflow
  • Pytorch
  • VS Code

The story for the first two isn't great for Fedora, sadly. VS Code seems more attainable, but it's not currently in the 3rd party repos. Would it be possible to add it?

Other things we could mention:

  • Jupyter notebook
  • Programming languages of note: Python, Rust, Go, ...
  • Presumably being a good developer platform for OpenShift?

There is an official VS Code repo for Fedora, so I think we can say that that's available...

Maybe the list could be: Podman, OpenShift, Jupyter Notebook, VS Code, PyCharm, Rust, Go and Python?

I passed the guidance on to the websites team - closing.
