#135 Review Settings branding changes for Fedora 32
Closed: Fixed 4 years ago by catanzaro. Opened 4 years ago by kalev.

gnome-control-center had a bunch of upstream changes to the About panel this cycle and this caused us to change the downstream branding that's applied there. In particular we no longer show the "Fedora 32" text.

I'd like the Workstation WG to review the changes -- is it correct to only have the Fedora logo, or should it be accompanied with a large "Fedora 32" text?

We could go with the vertical orientation of the logo (with the name), if we'd prefer:

I was also wondering whether it would be better to switch the positions of the second and third list sections, but I wasn't sure...

In particular we no longer show the "Fedora 32" text.

It still says "Fedora 32 (Workstation Edition)" - it's just smaller and further down.

We maybe need to differentiate between branding and prioritisation of the various information in the panel. The branding remains - it's just the hierarchy of the information that's changed.

If we're talking about information hierarchy, it becomes a question of what this panel is for and how to prioritise the different use cases.

The logo guidelines show "The Infinity design logo" by itself but with trademark sign, which I don't see in Fedora 32.

Curiously, "Vertical logo variation" seems to have a microscopic trademark sign. It's so small it looks like dust on my screen, except it moves when scrolling. The guidelines page refers to everything being an svg, but when clicking on them, they're png. Also FWIW there is a logo update happening in 2021.

We could go with the vertical orientation of the logo (with the name), if we'd prefer:

Good solution. Let's do it.

We can cook a patch for it if you want, but ideally we'd change it upstream rather than downstream.

We have to submit a logo usage request to get access to the SVGs, then create a new PNG in the required image resolution using that.

I'm eagerly awaiting it, but it hasn't happened yet, so doesn't matter for the purposes of this issue.

This was actually one reason why we changed the design in the way we did - the pairing of the logo with the unbranded text below wasn't harmonious.

If it's something we want, we could propose the change upstream and see what the response is before applying it...

I've submitted a request for this. However, wouldn't it be better to have the vertical orientation included in the fedora-logos package rather than patching the control center?

Is there any way how to make both the Fedora version, and the GNOME version more prominent?

Reordering the two sections would help with that a little bit, but I feel like we could use a place somewhere that really showcases the GNOME and Fedora versions so that people could show off what they have (in screenshots and demos etc). Previously, the large "Fedora XX" text helped with that, but it then missed the GNOME version.

Like, could we have something along the lines of "Fedora 32 (Workstation Edition), powered by GNOME 3.36.0" shown somewhere where it stands out a bit?

Is there any way how to make both the Fedora version, and the GNOME version more prominent?

I can see the argument for having a prominent version number, assuming that we think that's a popular reason to use this panel.

I'm less sure about making the GNOME version prominent; partly because we generally try not to assume that users know what GNOME is.

Regarding having a heading with the version at the top, the challenge is making it coherent with the logo - which is where things fell down in the previous version, in my opinion.

One thing we could consider is a custom graphic at the top, which incorporates the version number. Or we could try doing a heading with Comfortaa. That way we could potentially have something like this:

Or like this:

In each case we'd need to get an OK from a trademarks perspective. We'd also need to figure out what's viable in terms of a) ongoing maintenance and b) deviation from upstream.

I wouldn't go incorporating version numbers into brand. I'd stick to the official logos. The detailed view provides versioning of the system and the base GNOME.

Also FWIW there is a logo update happening in 2021.

Wait wait? Why is it delayed again? It's supposed to be this year...

I prefer the look of the 'vertical orientation' of the logo that includes fedora graphical text without the release version number.

To be clear: this is mine and @jimmac's recommendation too.

I believe FY2021 maps to CY2020 (I think most of last year was actually FY2020), but @duffy can clarify here.

Red Hat's fiscal years are not aligned to calendar years, which is why they refer to FY2020 (which I think aligned mostly with CY2019) and FY2021 (which mostly is in CY2020).

If we want to go with the vertical orientation logo, we will need someone to make the change. Any takers?

Basically yes. Historically we used March-February fiscal years, and FY2020 just ended. FY2021 would have started this month, except Red Hat is transitioning from fiscal years to calendar year accounting, so we're not calling it that anymore, but whatever. I've asked for an update in that issue.

I could make the change if I had access to a file to use for the logo. Problem is that I don't see a suitable logo in fedora-logos. Closest I can find is https://pagure.io/fedora-logos/blob/master/f/fedora/fedora_logo.svg but that's not the desired version of the logo.

I have access to the image file now. I guess the options are:

  1. Patch the control center, and add it there
  2. Add the vertical orientation logo to fedora-logos, and teach the control center to use it

Ahh OK, I was confused today. So it's possible we should use the new logo.

Final freeze 2020-04-07

I have access to the image file now.

Can you email it to me, please?

No, let's wait for Mo to coordinate the transition to the new logo. There are a lot of places that will need to change.

(I can make it smaller if that seems too large.)

Alternative (smaller):

I'd go smaller still. The logo there looks like it's around 160px across. Something around 130px might be the way to go:

OK, final screenshot, looks pretty close to your suggested size:

Screenshot_from_2020-03-16_13-35-06.png

This is 162x152, exactly 20% of the original SVG size. (There's transparency at the edges of the image.)

I've reported https://pagure.io/fedora-logos/issue/12 to add suitable logos to the fedora-logos package. We might wind up going back to just the icon in the meantime.
