#12 Provide a clean set of default Wallpapers
Closed: Fixed 6 years ago Opened 7 years ago by ryanlerch.

Currently, the set of wallpapers that are shown to the user in Workstation by default are quite old and haven't been updated for a while. They are typically a grouping of the default Wallpapers from upstream GNOME.

It would be great to provide a smaller set of new default wallpapers in Fedora Workstation.

The idea for this proposal is to, by default in Fedora Workstation:

  1. Provide the default Fedora wallpaper for the release, that is created for each release by the Fedora Design Team. This will remain the default wallpaper as it currently is.
  2. Provide the default wallpaper & lock screen artwork for the upstream desktop release (i.e. the default GNOME wallpaper and GNOME Lockscreen for the release of GNOME being shipped)
  3. Remove all the other wallpapers we currently ship and create a new set of the 15 wallpapers from the previous Fedora supplemental wallpapers.

Discussed in 2017-Apr-24 WG meeting -- proposal is accepted with the exception of adding 15 wallpapers to the set. This makes the selector nicely formatted (3 per row): 15 selected backgrounds, plus one Fedora default, plus two GNOME default (background + lock screen).

Ryan is checking with Design team that this continues to be OK to take to next step (selection).

Updated the original comment on this thread to refelct these changes

Update from the May 8 WG meeting: the wallpapers are being collected on fedora-design-list. Ryan will split gnome-backgrounds so we can include just the Adwaita backgrounds by default.

An update on this, we have a set of wallpapers approved by the design team, and these are packaged up, and a review request is open here:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1453084

The splitting up of gnome-backgrounds has been done in rawhide, with the new gnome-backgrounds-extras package:

https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=889855

This has taken a little longer than expected to get to this point, so if we want to get this into Fedora 26, i assume that a freeze exception will be needed.

Not sure if this is something that we want to do, or just bump this to Fedora 27.

Just filed a PR to add fedora-workstation-backgrounds to the default install, https://pagure.io/fedora-comps/pull-request/136 and @ryanlerch did a bodhi update for the gnome-backgrounds split, https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2017-2f1181657a

IIUC there will be a F26 common bug as a result of this change -- if a user is using a stock background from F25 gnome-backgrounds, and they upgrade to F26, their background will disappear until they reinstall gnome-backgrounds-extra. AFAIK this doesn't trigger any blocker criteria so it doesn't affect release. However, I'll note the effect on https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F26_bugs for users. Thanks to @eischmann for reporting about it.

What's the intended upgrade path here? I know upgrades are hard, but we need to do better than this.

I already filed https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1464555 and will track this; the freeze is next week but an exception should be easy to get if needed. The fix itself seems trivial.

And looks like this is in. Closing as fixed!
