Otherwise, running tox didn't work for me.

Try it with python3-setuptools_git installed :) I generally just rely on that being present. It would be nice to be able to declare that dependency, though. I'm not sure if adding it to setup_requires is the right thing to do.

per https://pypi.org/project/setuptools-git/1.1/#gotchas it seems it is, so I guess I'll do that.

@ralph do you think this is sufficient?
