#18 Request for content - Debugging evolution
Opened 14 years ago by jlaska. Modified 6 years ago

As noted by Christopher Beland on [https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2009-June/msg00723.html fedora-test-list], evolution is near the top of most bugs filed by component in bugzilla. This ticket is intended to track drafting a debugging guide for evolution.

Similar guides are available at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Category:Debugging

Hasn't gone anywhere, but this would certainly be a good thing to have. CCing the Evo maintainers to see if they want to help out here.

I'd strongly prefer any such debugging guide be maintained on gnome.org.

We already have a (slightly out-of-date) web page with Evolution debugging tips:
http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/bugs.shtml

And that page is referenced in the Evolution Users Guide:
http://library.gnome.org/users/evolution/3.2/problems-debug-how-to.html.en

I'd be fine with moving the debugging tips page to live.gnome.org for easier editing, but it really should stay distro-neutral. Upstream's wiki is at http://live.gnome.org/Evolution.

We could certainly just link out to the GNOME one, yup. As long as a guide's available that's the key thing, it doesn't matter where it's hosted, really. Thanks for the links! It would be nice to have it on the GNOME wiki to make it more updateable, indeed.

This is still pretty much valid...and http://projects.gnome.org/evolution/bugs.shtml seems to be gone.

The old page was replaced by a WiKi page. It still can be found at https://projects-old.gnome.org/evolution/bugs.shtml , but the current information source for Evolution begins at:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution
where is a link to user guide
https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/
and the debugging environment variables
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Debugging

The part about backtraces is also provided by the GNOME itself, here:
http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces

Yeah, I saw those pages, but they're not quite what was envisaged for this ticket. The type of content we were looking for was something like - "I'm a user, and I've got some kind of problem with Evolution, and I want to report a bug: what, in general, should I do to file a good bug?"

The kind of stuff you find at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Xorg_problems or https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_sound_problems .

What about a section in User's Manual?
https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/index.html.en#tracking-down-problems

At least as an addition to the debugging pages mentioned above.
