#210 Magazine Categories - Reorganization?
Closed: Fixed None Opened 8 years ago by jflory7.

It was mentioned in #fedora-mktg today about proposing changes to the Magazine categories to something a bit more intuitive to readers. With the advent of the Community Blog, the category of "For contributors" isn't as useful, and as-is right now, the categories are fairly broad and loosely defined.

We were wanting to discuss ideas for new, relevant categories that more accurately target the type of material we're putting out. Ideas mentioned were…

  • Fedora News
  • How-To
  • Events

And so on. What are your thoughts and ideas on new categories?

When I produced the Italian magazine I had those bullet points:

  • editorial (more or less the 5FTW)
  • introducing the teams (a sort of general explanations of the workflow of each group)
  • interview (questions to someone tied to the Project)
  • events (a storyteller talking about one or more events he attended)
  • software (installation and use of one or more useful software)
  • first steps (first we started to get more comfortable the use of the terminal)
  • basic system (capabilities of the basic system e.g. services)
  • advanced system (as above for advanced users e.g. kernel explanation and so on)
  • "unknown" commands (use and usefulness of a command unknown to the most)
  • craziness (fun stuff taken from the forum e.g strange or funny questions/answers)
  • coming soon (preview of next release).

Of course those categories was studied for a semestral pdf magazine and we rotated arguments based on posts we had in that moment.

I think some of then could be used also for fedmag.

    So considering this list, here's a potential proposed list of new categories (mixed in with some of my own ideas), organized alphabetically.

== Proposed Categories, rev. 1 ==
'''5 Things in Fedora This Week''' (no change)
'''(Fedora) Contributor Community'''
* Articles about "the happenings" across the Fedora Project that are of interest to the entire Fedora user community (wider audience than CommBlog)
'''Events'''
* Anything pertaining to events or real world happenings with Fedora (good place for Ambassadors to be engaged too…)
'''Hot off the press! / New in Fedora'''
* Either name, depending on how serious we want to keep things. :)
* For breaking news about major changes or updates about changes that ''directly impact users''
'''How do you Fedora''' (no change)
'''Interviews'''
* Distinctly different from ''How do you Fedora''
* Can contain any type of interview (example: Creating laser light shows with Fedora)
'''Using software'''
* Slug: ''/software''
* For how-tos / guides / walkthroughs of using software in Fedora
'''Using hardware'''
* Slug: ''/hardware''
* For how-tos / guides / walkthroughs of using software with Fedora

I was wanting to scroll through our recent articles for more ideas, but I am unable to reach the Magazine right now… if I have more ideas, I'll pitch them later. For now, though, does this seem like a solid set of proposed categories? Any -1s on one of these?

Good list, I agreed.

I miss only something hilarius. A cartoon or a comic dialogue; something able to break the monotony of a series of articles.

My two cents.

The Magazine came back for me and I got a chance to scroll through a few pages of articles, so I had another idea for a category too. :) How about…

'''5 Things in Fedora This Week''' (no change)
'''(Fedora) Contributor Community'''
* Articles about "the happenings" across the Fedora Project that are of interest to the entire Fedora user community (wider audience than CommBlog?)
'''Events'''
* Anything pertaining to events or real world happenings with Fedora (good place for Ambassadors to be engaged too…)
'''Hot off the press! / New in Fedora'''
* Either name, depending on how serious we want to keep things. :)
* For breaking news about major changes or updates about changes that directly impact users
'''How do you Fedora''' (no change)
'''Interviews'''
* Distinctly different from How do you Fedora
* Can contain any type of interview
* Example: ''Creating laser light shows with Fedora''
'''Off the record'''
* For a new type of article relating to anything humorous or perhaps off the "normal" type of articles that appear (for fun articles!)
'''Using software'''
* Slug: /software
* For how-tos / guides / walkthroughs of using software in Fedora
'''Using hardware'''
* Slug: /hardware
* For how-tos / guides / walkthroughs of using software with Fedora
'''Word from high command'''
* Articles relating to "calls of action" or other types of post about specific topics from deep inside Fedora
* Example: ''Fedora Marketing is not a spectator sport''

Today's meeting is a little heavy. Removing this from the discussion list.

Putting this up for this meeting. I can do this pretty easily if I'm granted the privileges on the Magazine.

'''Discussed in [https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-meeting-1/2016-03-30/marketing.2016-03-30-20.59.html 2016-03-30 meeting].'''

stickster / ryanlerch are the best people to make this call and weren't at the meeting. I'm going to follow up with one of them privately to work on the new categories.

I had some thoughts on the categories. I like the majority of the suggestions, but I also believe Ryan as editor in chief will need to make the final call. Here's my proposal with slight changes:
capture CTA posts into Contributor Community
subsume HDYF into Interviews (although the series can keep its name in titles, just like other series)
* eliminate comedy posts -- we can't judge how it will come off with all audiences, and we don't have enough articles for monotony to be an issue, so this is a solution in search of a problem

I think ryanlerch as editor in chief should probably make the final call here, but I think none of the proposals are bad as-is.

'''5 Things in Fedora This Week''' (no change)
'''(Fedora) Contributor Community'''
* Articles about "the happenings" across the Fedora Project that are of interest to the entire Fedora user community (wider audience than CommBlog?)
* Example: ''We're making Fedora more modular''
* Articles relating to "calls of action" or other types of post about specific topics from deep inside Fedora

'''Interviews'''
* Distinctly different from How do you Fedora
* Can contain any type of interview
* Example: ''Creating laser light shows with Fedora''
* Includes '''How do you Fedora'''
* requires renaming existing category, can be done in the SQL trivially if not in the WP UI
'''Using software'''
* Slug: /software
* For how-tos / guides / walkthroughs of using software in Fedora
* '''Using hardware'''
* Slug: /hardware
* For how-tos / guides / walkthroughs of using software with Fedora

I don't think this ticket needs to be on the meeting agenda anymore. I've followed up with Ryan in PM letting him know about the ticket.

I think this is awesome! and all of our current posts would easily fit in one of these.

My vote is for "New in Fedora" rather than "Hot off the press!", but it could easlity be just "Fedora News" though not sold on that either. I assume this category will contain items like ones about serious security issues, and updates to big packages (like the firefox updateposts we sometimes do)

Earlier last week, Ryan went through and did the recategorization. This ticket is now complete! ryanlerch++ stickster++ mailga++
