#204 Proposed change primary tagline in main website get.fp.o
Closed: Fixed None Opened 8 years ago by mailga.

Websites requested a more effective tagline in get.fp.o.
The team discussed about it in [https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-websites/ticket/349 this ticket]
Any proposal from creative people is welcome.
My ideas (with a peek on the three flavors) are something like:

"Fedora now .... and everywhere"
"Fedora! The complete OS"
"Fedora for all the systems"
"Get Fedora .... install everywhere"
"Fedora is here ..... install everywhere"
and so on...

Get.fp.o is the entrance door for our OS, so the tagline is really important.
It has to be:
1) nice;
2) recognizable;
3) easy to remenber.

One idea I had is something like "Cutting-edge innovation from the ground up" with some kind of graphic to play on the relation of workstation => server => cloud.

I really feel like the idea of a vertical ascension from the ground (workstation) to the sky (cloud) is a clear relation and can also be universally understood with supporting images.

I also like "Fedora for all the systems" sort of tagline as well.

I've been thinking something more along the lines of "Cutting-edge innovation for your server, workstation, and cloud."

Yes, true.
But by definition a tagline has to be really short, easy to remember.
So we have to find simply words, "one shot" sentence that sets us apart from others.

When you surf the web, almost all websites refer to "innovation". And the colloquial "you-your" is really abused. IMO

"Which Fedora do you need today?"

"Choose the Fedora that works best for you."

"The free and open source OS tailored for your needs."

"Choose freedom. Choose Fedora."

Hi Mairin,

I love this one, currently the best.

Hi Mairin,

I love this one, currently the best.

I like that one a lot as well, but I think maybe we can massage it a little bit further to cover the value of Fedora beyond just freedom of choice.

What about:
"Choose freedom. Choose friends. Choose Fedora."

Reasoning: the repetition resonates, it includes the community aspect of Fedora and it carries a pattern of 'threes' that ties to our three Editions.

The idea is nice, but I would choose probably a tagline which relies more on the three editions we have actually.

In our new main index, which will be released with F23, we have already a very prominent section with our 4 foundations. Adding them in the tagline too would result repetitive, IMHO.

Do you have a mock-up of what that looks like somewhere?

it's at http://stg.getfedora.org

I think if we limit it to "Choose freedom. Choose Fedora." it relates more to the 3 editions because you have the freedom to choose the Fedora you want, but also emphasizes one of our major differentiators compared to other distros (emphasis on software freedom)

Maybe then: "Choose freedom. Choose a Fedora." ?

Let me make an observation about the foundations.
People are going to download Fedora don't care so much about them. So the foundation "friends" makes more sense for us which are working on it.
Word "freedom" has more relevant impact on people mind; it's a feeling the whole world welcomes, even if people are not working for Fedora.

This is my opinion.

Summarizing proposals:

  1. "Fedora now .... and everywhere" -> referring clearly to the three editions (Workstation, Server and Cloud);

  2. "Fedora: cutting-edge innovation from the ground up" -> referring clearly to the increasing application of the three editions (Workstation, Server and Cloud);

  3. "Fedora: Cutting-edge innovation for your server, workstation, and cloud" -> as above;

  4. "Which Fedora do you need today?" -> referring to the versatility of Fedora;

  5. "Choose the Fedora that works best for you"-> as above;

  6. "The free and open source OS tailored for your needs" -> referred both to the freedom feature and to the versatility;

  7. "Choose freedom. Choose Fedora" -> referring to the freedom feature;

  8. "Choose freedom. Choose friends. Choose Fedora." -> referring clearly to the foundations.

If there are not any other suggestion, please apply +1 and mention the tagline you choose.

Vote now!

First pick is 7
