Summary of changes

@mattdm I understand this may not fall to you to create but this is a place holder for who ever is tapped to do it.

@rlengland it looks like this is due to go out tomorrow (2022-03-29). I assume that you have everything under control?

Oops, never mind. The "What's New" doesn't go out tomorrow. Just the beta announcement. I misread the schedule.

Hello, here is the draft preivew link!

https://fedoramagazine.org/?p=36216&preview=1&_ppp=3dc7a57e1e

Any suggestions on what to put in the "Also check out..." section?

I guess one of the main focuses in the last few months has been a slight revamp of some of the communication channels. Matt uploaded a video about what he has done here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFn4zz2dqK0.

I don't think the new Matrix homeserver has been mentioned yet either. I guess you could slip in a mention of that.

You might also point out that a few new social media links have been added to the upper-right section of Fedora Magazine's web site. The links for YouTube, Matrix, and Discussion are new.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Awesome, I've added a mention of that there. Here's an updated preview link as the old one stopped working https://fedoramagazine.org/?p=36216&preview=1&_ppp=37cdc52992

The draft looks really good - thanks to Merlin for working on it! I've been through the draft and have a list of comments and suggestions; I'd be happy to provide specific change proposals if that's easier.

This list might look a bit long, but it's not really that big.

The three sentences in the opening paragraph could be better linked - at the moment they feel a bit thrown together. A clearer statement that F36 is just out might help.

"Just some of the features in GNOME 42 include" doesn't read quite right. There are possible too many qualifiers, and "just some" feels a bit downbeat. You could write it as "GNOME 42 includes many improvements and new features, including...".

It's unclear exactly what "improved screen update performance" and "ability for inputs to happen at their full rate" actually means. The relevant line from the GNOME release notes is "Input handling has been significantly enhanced, resulting in lower input latency and improved responsiveness when the system is under load. This will be particularly beneficial for games and graphics applications."

"Wayland support with Nvidia’s proprietary graphics driver" - Wayland support for that driver isn't new, it's just the default session that has changed.

"elements all throughout" - cut the "all", it seems superfluous

"subtly redesigned status icons, and new folder icons." - all the symbolic icons that have been updated, not just the ones that you mention

"The top bar is also now entirely flat – the little claws are now gone." Flat typically refers to a lack of depth, as communicated by gradients, so I don't think that's the right term to use here. Additionally, "little claws" isn't a term I'd heard before and sounds a bit informal. You could describe the top bar as now being square, and having had the rounded corners removed?

Dark mode - it might be good to mention that the pre-installed wallpapers include dark mode variants.

"Several of them have now been ported to GTK 4, and GNOME 42 also sees the début of many core applications ported to GTK 4 + libadwaita, a new widget library that implements GNOME’s human interface guidelines." - this sentence is a little confusing:

  • "début of many core applications ported to GTK 4" seems like a contradition in terms
  • it repeats "ported to GTK 4"
  • the + in "GTK 4 + libadwaita" was a bit confusing to my eyes, due to GTK previously being called GTK+. :D
  • You could maybe write the sentence as "A number of them have been ported to GTK 4 and are now using libadwaita, a new widget library that implements GNOME's Human Interface Guidelines."

"The Calculator, Characters, Clocks, Contacts, Disk Usage Analyser, Fonts, Settings, Software, and Weather apps have all been ported to GTK 4 + libadwaita" - this bullet point seems to repeat the earlier paragraph about GTK 4.

The paragraph starting "For example, the Software app now includes a more informative update interface and more prominently features GNOME Circle apps" is missing some structure. Together with the paragraph before, it is mixing different points, which results in a bit of a jumble. You could create a new paragraph along the following lines:

"Many of these apps have received user interface improvements for GNOME 42. For example, the Software app now includes a more informative update interface, and more prominently features GNOME Circle apps. The Settings app has also been revamped with a more visually appealing interface that matches the visual tweaks present throughout GNOME Shell."

"Nvidia users are now finally able to use GNOME on Wayland." This makes it sound like it previously wasn't possible to use Wayland with the proprietary Nvidia driver. That's not accurate - you could opt to do so. What has changed for F36 is the default session for that driver.

"To improve consistency with text rendering, the Noto fonts are now used by default in several languages instead of the DejaVu fonts." - I think the point here is that Noto provides greater coverage for different character sets.

@aday I've attempted to include your suggestions to the best of my understanding but the section "Wayland support on Nvidia's proprietary graphics driver" is apparently beyond my understanding.

May I ask you to provide a suggested replacement for that section?
Also for anything else I may have bodgered up?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks @rlengland ! The updated version reads well. I've done another round of review; feel free to take or leave these suggestions.

"You may upgrade your system today through GNOME Software, via dnf system-upgrade in the terminal, or download the live ISO image from the official website!" > I would maybe expand this call to action and move it to the end of the post.

Looks like there's some inconsistent use of header styles in the GNOME 42 section - some headings are unnecessarily bigger/smaller.

The post includes several instances of the term "tune-ups", which don't feel appropriate. Replace with "refinements"?

"In addition the pre-installed wallpapers now include dark mode variants." - missing comma > "In addition, the pre-installed wallpapers now include dark mode variants."

"Dark themes can help reduce eye-strain when working in an environment with little ambient light, and can help conserve battery life and reduce the risk of burn-in on OLED displays." - sentence clauses would benefit from more delineation > "Dark themes can help reduce eye-strain when there is low ambient light, can help conserve battery life, and can reduce the risk of burn-in on OLED displays."

"Previously, pressing the Print Screen key simply took a screenshot of the entire screen and saved it to ~/Pictures/Screenshots." - that's not actually true > "Previously, pressing the Print Screen key simply took a screenshot of the entire screen and saved it to the Pictures folder."

"Many of these apps have received user interface improvements for GNOME 42. For example, the Software app now includes a more informative update interface, and more prominently features GNOME Circle apps. The Settings app has also been revamped with a more visually appealing interface that matches the visual tweaks present throughout GNOME Shell." - Seems odd to have a general paragraph in the middle of bullet list. Maybe split this into two bullets >

"- Settings has been revamped with a more visually appealing interface that matches the visual tweaks present throughout GNOME Shell."
"- The Software app now includes a more informative update interface, and more prominently features GNOME Circle apps.>

Revised paragraph on Wayland and Nvidia: "In previous versions, Fedora Workstation defaulted to the X display server when using Nvidia's proprietary graphics driver. With Fedora 36, that has now changed: in most cases, Wayland will be used by default, even when using Nvidia. If you experience issues with the Wayland session, you can always switch back to the Xorg session by clicking the gear icon at the bottom-right corner of the login screen and choosing “GNOME on Xorg”."

"PackageKit and dnf no longer reinstall weak dependencies that you have manually removed after a package installation when you update those packages." - I don't understand that sentence! Is this better? "When updating with DNF, weak dependencies that have been manually removed will no longer be reinstalled."

@aday Thanks for the edits. I've folded many in as well as "tweaking" the voice in several places.
I think we are good to go.

It's looking fantastic! Thanks @rlengland and @mxanthropocene for your work on this!

Thank you for the critiques and tweaks!! The article looks amazing now :100: you guys are awesome  thank you for the opportunity to write this article

So the release is out and this is still unpublished. Editors, can we get this live, please?

I set the slug to be consistent with the last few "What's New" articles and smashed the publish button.

I see that the sidebar also needs updated. @rlengland, can you take care of that? I think it is just a separate page in WordPress that you have to edit. But I'm not sure. I've never done it. I can do it later, but I have a bunch of server upgrades to juggle right now.

Folks, can you please make "You can upgrade your system through GNOME Software" sentence link to https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading/ ? It is really important this cycle that people are informed to fully update their system first, before upgrading to F36. Thanks!
