#366 Using UV on Fedora to improve your Python development and run Python apps
Closed: published 15 days ago by rlengland. Opened 2 months ago by josevnz.

Hello team,

I do have an idea for an article, it is about UV (A Python packager written in Rust, https://docs.astral.sh/uv/) which is taking by storm the Python world.

My spin for the article:
Gentle introduction to UV, the alternatives: Pip, Poetry, Anaconda
Migrating an existing project to UV
Using UV to run everyday tools like Ansible, Glances, Flake8, Autopep8

I think this will generate lots of interest, specially since UV makes it so easy to try software in their own virtual environments with less boilerplate, better dependency resolution and faster speed.

I this something Fedora Magazine is open about? The article will be written using Fedora as the OS of choice.

I think this sounds like a reasonabe Fedora Magazine article. @glb ?

The license looks right: https://github.com/astral-sh/uv

+1 from me. :-)

@josevnz You are set to go. You can add your article to the Fedora Wordpress instance at this location:
https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin/post-new.php
When you have the article ready for the editors to review, leave a link to the WordPres preview as a comment here in this ticket and we'll start the review/edit/publication process.

Thank you!

Terrific, I will get started and will keep you posted. Thanks again for the opportunity.

Hello guys,

I'm almost done writing code, then will clean up the draft. You can see an early preview here:

https://github.com/josevnz/tutorials/pull/15/files

Done coding, will review and merge to master on Pypi, then will start writing the blog draft.

Draft is ready for review:

https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=41811&action=edit

Things I noticed:

Also what is the best way to embed an image? I inserted one as a link from my github repository, but it is possible to serve it locally?

Please let me know what you think so far and I will make the corresponding edits.

Thanks.

@josevnz we've not done a detailed review but the article looks in reasonable shape so far. The only oddity I noted at this time is the "[project.urls]" text that shows up near the bottom of the section titled "Other things that you should have..." Can you clarify/modify what this is?

It appears that you have inserted your article from another source, maybe? This can sometimes introduce "oddities" in WP. This may be the reason for some of the changes I made to the formatting. These changes were the following:
- I modified the code blocks to be "prefomatted" so hopefully they are a bit better, now.
- When you want to insert "code" styling in a sentence, it is best to use the style "keyboard input" rather then "inline code". The "inline code" style causes the text to be broken out on a separate line.
- Images are probably best saved as an image in WP and inserted from there. The following is an outline of the process for doing this.

Adding images to WP articles:

From https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin
- select the "Media" item in the left column menu.
On that page, at the top
- select "Add New Media File"
In the next window, either drop the image file or select to add the image to the Media Library

In your article select the location where you wish to add the image. You need to see the blue bar with a "+" in the center. Select the "+" and you will be prompted to add a number of item types. One of these will be "Image". Select that and on the popup menu select "Media Library".

Select the image you added to the media library and add the alternate text, if you wish, and the Caption for the image.

Select the "Select" button at the bottom of the menu to insert your image.

Let us know if we can help further and when you believe we should continue reviewing.

Thank you.

Hello,

I'm done making fixes: https://fedoramagazine.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=41811&action=edit

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

@josevnz I'm done editing your article. Only some minor language "flow" and clarity changes. I've also added a featured image.

This would be a good time for you to give it one more review before we schedule it for publication, just to make certain it is where you want it.

Let us know when your are done and one of the editors will schedule it for publication.

Thank you.

Hello,

Article looks great, I added a note at the end about uv.lock and the just approved PEP 751: https://discuss.python.org/t/pep-751-one-last-time/77293/153

This is going to make packaging Python applications much better.

No other changes from my side, love the image by the way.

let's publish it.

Thanks!

@josevnz Thanks for the review. Remember to leave the edit session on the article so I can have access to publish.
