#274 Unlocking the Power of Fedora CoreOS
Closed: published by rlengland. Opened by glb.

Fedora CoreOS offers a powerful combination of immutability, automatic updates, container optimization, and customization capabilities, making it a versatile choice for modern infrastructure and application deployment scenarios.

First glance at this article I note the use of the term "immutable". If the CoreOS team is okay with using that term then we will use it. However, there was a recent announcement about referring to rpm-ostree based variants of Fedora using the term Fedora Atomic Desktops. See this reference:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/AtomicDesktops
I understand the meaning but it was deemed "confusing" to the user community, hence the suggested new naming.

Please check with the CoreOS team about this.

Also, is there a reason to include numbers for each section in the article? They do not seem to add anything to the organization of the article so I would suggest removing them.

We will review the article in more depth, soon.

Hello @rlengland thank you so much for your feedbacks, I have added cover image and featured image, I have also implemented other corrections. About using the term 'immutable', I have taken it to the fedora chat room and I am waiting for their feedbacks. I tried tagging you in the room but I could not find your name

I've not done a full read/review yet but the following jumps out (copied from chat):

You're mentioning IoT use cases for Fedora CoreOS but we have Fedora IoT so we should probably mention them instead

@aishat Thank you for the featured image, however, the size needs to be adjusted/trimmed to 1890x800 pixels. It will be used by other feeds and that size will conform to their needs.
If you would, please adjust it.

Also, it is not necessary to include the image at the top of the article as well as the featured image. ONLY the featured image is required. Otherwise it will appear twice at the top of the article (as it currently does in the preview).

Thanks

After reading over the article, some of it seems redundant. It is mentioned several times that CoreOS is "Fedora CoreOS is an automatically updating, immutable operating system designed for running containerized workloads securely and at scale." Can we make this more concise?

Also, can you provide a little info on exactly what an "Ignition" file is, and how it is generated from a Butane file? That might clarify exactly how CoreOS becomes whatever you want it to be. You might add that link in the conclusion.

Finally, you might distinguish Fedora CoreOS from Fedora IoT, since they are two separate projects, although they may share some similarities.

References to previous articles for things such as "ignition" and "butane" would be fine. I'm pretty certain those have been described in earlier articles.

Hello @rlengland I have implemented all feedbacks, I resized the featured image, I talked about ignition files and butane, I talked about Fedora Iot independently and removed redundancies. I also checked with the CoreOS team about changing the term 'immutable' to 'atomic desktops', and they suggested that I leave it as immutable.

@tffhrtp this ticket has now been assigned to @aishat and moved to the review category. Review and edit as you are able. Thanks!

@aishat eveeything looks good to go, great read.

@aishat one last note, can we update the image font to use the newer Fedora font?

Yes @tffhrtp . But to be sure, please is it Noto font?

Just the Fedora logo needs to be updated

I just changed the featured image, please check

I'm just eyeing it, but it looks like the text is going outside the normal bounds of what is considered "safe" from clipping by the various social media platforms.

I can see it too, I will adjust it now. Aside from the size of the text, what do you think about the new image please?

It looks like you are mixing the Fedora logo and the CoreOS logo in a way that might be forboden.

I have updated the featured image. Kindly check

I guess I'm not seeing the update.

This might be the right logo:

There seem to be several variations of this logo floating around. I think I like this one the best:

The logo I used at first is the same as this, but colored blue instead of white. I have now used this particular logo and I have updated the featured image. Please check

This looks pretty good to me. I think I would align the left edge of "Use Cases" with the left edge of "CoreOS", but that is more subjective. I think this article is good enough for publication now.

And if you are new to Fedora CoreOS, the tutorial section at is a great place to start.

Thank you so much. I didn't catch that. I've corrected it and left aligned 'use cases' with 'coreos' in the image

Thank you so much everyone for your help and guidance. I look forward to the publication

I've fixed the following issues in the text:
- Only use Fedora CoreOS as the name and do not abbreviate as CoreOS
- FCCT has been renamed to Butane
- Removed mentions of RHCOS & OpenShift which are Red Hat products

As I said in https://pagure.io/fedora-magazine-newsroom/issue/274#comment-903879, I think it's a really bad idea to showcase Fedora CoreOS for Edge / IoT deployment when we have the Fedora IoT variant that targets that use case. This would be sending a really weird/mixed message to the community.

There are also a lot of duplicated texts in this article. Sentences like:

Furthermore, the ability to customize Fedora CoreOS using tools like rpm-ostree and Ignition files allows you to tailor the operating system to meet the specific requirements of your server workloads, ensuring optimal performance and resource utilization.

are repeated several times. This makes it looks like as if an LLM has been used to generate part of this article, which would discredit the Fedora Magazine reputation.

In addition to the native support for Kubernetes cluster setup, Fedora CoreOS also integrates with Typhoon,

This is the reverse, Typhoon integrates Fedora CoreOS

Overall I'm not OK with publishing this article in this state.

@siosm Thank you very much for your feedback. I am not familiar with Fedora CoreOS or Fedora IoT and I know you are, so I will defer to your judgement about the quality of this article. Fedora Magazine will not publish this article unless the author is able to satisfy your concerns.

Thank you for helping to ensure that Fedora Magazine remains a reliable source of quality information about Fedora's operating systems.

Hello @siosm thank you so much for your feedbacks. I have edited the article to incorporate your corrections. Please check

@siosm Have the changes made to this article adequate to meet your suggestions?

Edit: Duplicate

Sorry, I haven't had the time to review it again yet.

I've started edited some parts of it but there is still way too much duplication. There are at least two sections that talk about automatic updates, similarly for Kubernetes and Ignition configs.

You should layout more clearly what you are going to speak about in each section and regroup things under those topics.

Right now this is still a no for me.

If this article needs too much of a rework then maybe the best thing is to put this topic on the backburner to not be spinning our wheels. Aisha is one of the Outreachy applicants for the Marketing Team project, and writing an article was one of the ways applicants could contribute during the application phase. The goal was to support CoreOS with an article to promote it more without you guys having to put in too much work. If you would basically be rewriting it then it would be better to not publish this article and then save you the time or the opportunity to cover the idea yourselves.

Also this is definitely not to fault Aisha. Writing for a technical topic is hard and something I have to balance carefully even with my time in the project. To at least have done the work and gotten more familiar with the technology is a step in the right direction to speaking about this subject with more familiarity.

What do we think about tabling this topic?

Hello @siosm and @rlengland . I have changed the layout of the article to remove the duplications. Please check it. Thank you so much

Thank you for your guidance so far. I have patiently edited the article after @siosm 's last feedback. I believe the article is now much better

@siosm
One last query on this article. Is it likely to be in an acceptable state without major rework on your part or, as @joseph suggested, should we just table it?

Sorry, I haven't had the time to review it again yet. Last week was all about Fedora 40 release.

OK, I fixed a couple of inaccuracies and we are now in a much better shape.

It's still a bit too "marketing-speak" for my taste but I'm not putting my name on it so it's not up to me to decide.

I'll let other folks from the Fedora magazine or @joseph do a final review pass.

It looks good to me. I say run it.

@aishat your article is scheduled to be published at 0800 UTC on 10 May.
I did some minor editing to shorten some rather long sentences and remove the passive voice.

Thanks for your contribution the the Fedora Magazine!
