Hello, *rcurtiswarfield - I'm going to move this card back to “Article Spec”. If you have the time to revisit this topic then please move it back to “In Progress” on the Taiga Kanban board.

Hi *rcurtiswarfield -- are you still planning to work on this rclone-based article?

Curt Warfield 11 Mar 2020 05:31
OK I'll revisit this again :-)

rcurtiswarfield So @rwaltr was telling us he does the exact same setup you mention. Maybe that's not such a bad idea to cover? It seems to me the users who are looking for this kind of solution might be willing to trade off some complexity for the security aspect.

Just a thought, but would a workable alternative/workaround be to create a file image on the google drive and then just encrypt that using the normal LUKS system (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Disk_Encryption_User_Guide)? Perhaps if you gave the file a unique extension you could even set up a automount script for it so that you could just double-click to open/mount the encrypted file?

I've never messed with LUKS, so I have no idea how well such a setup may or may not work. This is just an idea that popped in my mind about how I might go about doing something like this if I wanted to.

Yes because restic doesn't natively support Google Drive. I may reconsider doing is using rclone which does support Google Drive. However rclone doesn't encrypt by default. You have to create backup repository first and then create another repository that encrypts that initial one. I use rclone but in my opinion it's an extra step that has to be done that may turn people off.

*rcurtiswarfield Did you tell me the other day that this article was cancelled because it ended up too complicated to make it workable for most users?
