@mxanthropocene I see that you started this article in WP so I'm assuming that I should assign this Pagure ticket to you.

Can you verify that?

Thanks!

The F39 early target date is now less than 2 weeks away, so it would be good to get moving on this...

Some highlights to mention in the article:

@rlengland @aday Hello, yes I'm working on it, just been a bit busy with studies lately

I just need to get some screenshots and make the banner image.

@mxanthropocene I will create the feature (banner) image so you can spend time on the screenshots.

Thanks for this, @mxanthropocene ! The post looks good as always. I have some comments, most on minor factual and style changes:

  • "This version features stylish new widgets in most core apps" - "most" is not accurate. Replace with "many"?
  • "a new keyboard backlight brightness setting on supported systems" is a bit of a mouthful in that sentence. "a new keyboard backlight control" might be better.
  • "Little big things" - this section would benefit from an introductory sentence. Otherwise it's just a list of changes.
  • "The Adwaita-qt theme and QGnomePlatform are no longer included in Fedora Workstation 39, since they are no longer maintained" - I don't think it's accurate to say that they are no longer maintained. It's more that they have been replaced by improved support in Qt, and that the default styling is often better than the custom Adwaita styling.
  • "Several apps in GNOME 45" more than several :)
  • "More details are available here." I wouldn't link to the rethinking adaptivity post - it's rather long and technical. https://blogs.gnome.org/alicem/2023/09/15/libadwaita-1-4/ is more accessible to the general public.
  • "Eye of GNOME suffered from a lack of active maintenance and is stuck on GTK 3." EoG has a long-time maintainer who we shouldn't ignore. Maybe replace "maintenance" with "development"? (Personally, I would prefer to focus on the enhancements in the new app rather than the issues with the old one.)
  • Can we make more of the performance improvements section, and make it more general to Fedora rather than just being GNOME-specific? Christian's blog post mentions changes in systemd and glib for example. It's worth emphasising how these improvements span the full stack and how everyone benefits.
  • I would prefer it if we didn't promote Onyx in this post. Its purpose is to promote workstation and bringing in the other spins feels like a distraction.

@rlengland: I think the cover images for the "What's New" articles are supposed to have the Fedora Workstation logo overlaid (cf. What's New). Although, it looks like we've deviated from that tradition for the last couple of articles.

@glb I've added the the logo and pushed the new image to the repo and the article. If this looks okay it's ready for a merge in the repo.

Well, my point was that the What's New article traditionally focuses on the Fedora Workstation edition. (e.g. all the GNOME stuff doesn't really apply to the non-GNOME Fedora Linux spins) The previous cover images were labeled "Fedora Workstation XX" rather than "Fedora Linux XX". But maybe it doesn't really matter. I'm not sure.

BTW: I think we are supposed to use the Open Sans font for the logo text.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Fonts

Also, there is a note that says we're supposed to use white for the logo text.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Logo/UsageGuidelines#Never_Use_the_Logo_on_Similarly-Colored_Backgrounds

Personally, I would just overlay this.

@glb reverted image to official logo and text/font

Looks good. One more thing to be aware of with the What's New articles is that there is a link to them in GNOME's pop-up notification that a new system update is available. Consequently, you need to make sure the URL for the article will be what GNOME expects it will be by specifying the "slug" in the "quick edit" settings. The slug needs to be entered as "whats-new-fedora-NN-workstation" (substituting NN with the appropriate release number). (Yes, it ought to be whats-new-fedora-workstation-NN, but that is a legacy thing that we cannot change; at least not on our end.)

I've made that entry, thanks.
Is that slug requirement documented in the Fedora Magazine Docs someplace ?

Aside from all the image discussion, @mxanthropocene, what is your status on this article? Are you still working on screenshots, updates from @aday? Not rushing you, just wondering where you stand.

Hey, sorry for not responding much! I edited the article based on @aday 's feedback, I just need to upload the screenshots.

BTW @rlengland / @glb - The Fedora Workstation logo on the banner image is out of date - notice the Comfortaa font used for the "fedora" wordmark :)

As far as I know, that is still Fedora Workstation's logo. But I've pinged the Design team about it to be sure.

@steiner: The cover art used on the recent beta release announcement and again here on the What's New in Fedora Workstation article is something you created right? If so, we should credit you in the image caption.

Not that I'm aware of. What I created was the artwork we used to share the release announcement on social media, this one

The only reference I can find for it says "Fedora Design Team" (https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds/blob/main/Attribution). Maybe we should use that?

Oh, you mean the F39 Wallpaper? That was done by @jimmac.

Just pinging again to let you guys know I've put screenshots in the article (finally).
