#159 How to become a Shortwave listener(SWL) with Fedora Linux and a Software Defined Radio
Closed: scheduled a year ago by rlengland. Opened a year ago by rlengland.

I will describe the basics of shortwave listening - a hobby of listening to shortwave radio broadcasts between 1700 kHz and 30 MHz.

I’ll explain how to get an SWL sign for yourself, join contests, apps you could use to report your evidence for a listened radio exchange, and list many links to learn more and why this is a great hobby.

Then I’ll move to the next part of the article and describe the basics of an SDR[1] dongle (I believe most of them are not open hardware, I am not sure this is allowed at the Magazine), what kind of hardware you can purchase and what kind of open source software you could use to get started on Fedora Linux.

[1] A software-defined radio (SDR) system is a radio communication system that uses software for the modulation and demodulation of radio signals.

Do I need to provide an image and if yes, can I have more details please?

If you want to make the cover image, you can. Directions are here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-magazine/creating-an-image/ But you don't have to do that if you don't want to. If you leave it to the editors, we'll just pick something from unsplash.com and overlay it with the article title.

I rather leave it to the editors then :) Thanks!

I did a few minor changes. Is there anything else you need from me?

Is there anything else you need from me?

Nope. An editor should get it published in a few days. (Or maybe a week; We've been spreading the article publications out a bit because they are coming in a bit slow these days.) If we find a problem during editing, we'll let you know with a comment here.

@bogomil I've reviewe/edited your article. In general it looked pretty good but please take some time and read through it. I've tightened up the wording a bit and added the feature image.

Make certain I haven't changed anything by accident and let me know the status when you can.

Thanks for article. Makes me consider getting back into SWL. I was into that in my teenage years then automobiles, girls, and computers got in the way.

It looks like you missed the "y" in the 5th-from-last link (radio amateurs’ countr).

I can't believe you saw that :exclamation: Thanks for the catch.

Thanks a ton for your excellent work!

Who is managing the comments? How does that work?

@bogomil The editors monitor the comments and approve them. This is done to cut down on spam and bad actors. We don't do a continuous monitoring so sometimes there may be a lag in our approval but we try to stay on top of them as much as we can.

I just approved the first batch and it looks like there are some that could benefit from your response.

Thanks! I appreciate it!
