#102 Joining clients to Samba Domain Controller
Opened 2 years ago by dklima. Modified 2 years ago

Hi!

I would like to continue the series exploring the initial Samba Domain Controller installation.

In this follow-up article, I would like to explore the following points:

  • Joining Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 to the Domain;
  • Joining Fedora Linux 35 Server;
  • Joining Fedora Linux 35 Workstation;
  • Joining Windows 10 (?);

I'm uncertain about the Windows thing, would it be possible or allowed to do that?

Thoughts?

I would prefer to stay away from Windows as much as possible. It is fine to mention it or point people to documentation for how to use it. But I really don't think Fedora Magazine should be posting any sort of How To for using Windows.

The rest of it can be considered approved as an extension of your previous article.

Thanks!

I agree with just pointing somewhere else how to join Windows to the Domain.

One more thing, it is easier to use Microsoft RSAT to administrate GPOs, rather than samba-tool. Should I stick with samba-tool? I mean, I may know the answer because for using RSAT I would have to show how to join MS Windows to the domain and install RSAT.

I'd prefer you stick with samba-tool. You can mention RSAT as an alternative option that should work and point people to its documentation. But try to keep it to one sentence or at most two and only mention it after you've shown how to do it using FOSS.

BTW, I like the small animated gif demos you made in the previous article. Have you heard of termtosvg? I think it might generate an animation that would scale better and render a little sharper. I haven't tried posting one of its SVGs on the Fedora Magazine site, but if it works, I think the recording might look a little better.

Also, you are the only one I've ever seen with this problem where the tags keep getting reset. I assume you aren't clicking on the pencil icon in the upper-right corner? Its not a big deal. It is just weird.

Deal.

Nope, will give a try next time and let you know.

I just click the Comment button to comment here, nothing else. It also happens when I edit a comment that I made.

Hey!

I've tried the termtosvg app and I find it quite odd to work with.

What if I increase the terminal font and shrink its columns?

In my defense, when I was editing the article on WordPress, the size was ok, however it wasn't when in the main theme.

The gifs are fine really. I just thought the svg might come out a little better. But if you find it difficult to work with, that's reason enough to stick with the gifs. It's not that big of a deal at all; especially since people don't need to read the content of the gifs. It is just a demo of what has been explained already. 🙂

I would recommend trying to keep the font size and the width of the images consistent though.

Thanks.

That is the idea =)

Absolutely. I am aware of that.

Thank you!

@dklima are you still working on this article?

Hey!

Thanks for your patience on this matter.

I was struggling to get Linux working with GPO using samba-tool.

I will get into it again soon.
