#9 Suggestions for Present Windows (Desktop Effect)
Closed: Deferred to upstream 2 months ago by ngompa. Opened 3 years ago by michaeltunnell.

Suggestion 1 = Shortcut

I'd suggest changing the keyboard shortcut, or making the alternate, to Meta*+W to activate the effect.

Note * - "Meta" is the term KDE uses to refer to Super aka "Windows" key.

The current default shortcut is Ctrl+F10 which is just awkward nonsense. Meta+W isn't currently used for anything that I know of so there won't be a conflict.

Ctrl+F10 is the shortcut for displaying all windows on all desktops which I think is ideal for Meta+W. It is also possible for only on the current desktop but I think that's not as beneficial without a cohesive dashboard so I'd just ignore this other shortcut which is Ctrl+F9 (I think, these shortcuts are so terrible I try to forget sometimes)

In regards to existing shortcut as well . . . one of the good things about Plasma is you can create Global Shortcuts and Global Alternate Shortcuts so you can keep whatever garbage default they picked and also make a better one. So Meta+W and Ctrl+F10 can both be used for the function at the same time. 😎

Suggestion 2 = Better Presentation Default

I think the default method of displaying windows in the Present Windows desktop effect is very weird and clunky . . . resulting in no consistency of where windows might be.

I suggest simply changing the default Layout Mode from "Natural" (whatever that means) to Regular Grid instead. This makes the layout feel much more comfortable and it doesn't make the windows random sizes.

Here is an example of what the effect looks like in "Natural" mode:

Here is an example with the "Regular Grid" mode:

Is there any specific reason that would prevent this from happening in KDE upstream? If no, could you report that there too? Thanks

@siosm KDE upstream doesn't seem to make changes here unless they start happening in distros first.

I did try with Kubuntu and I did have receptive people include Nate from KDE for it being done in Kubuntu but based on that task, it hasn't been done since I suggested over a year ago.

Thanks! Having an upstream link for reference really helps.

This is all now changing for Plasma 6.1 to be more in line with these suggestions.
