#501 Make maliit-keyboard a recommended dependency for plasma-workspace (and other components)
Opened 23 days ago by daandemeyer. Modified 19 days ago

maliit-keyboard does not support qt6 yet and given the upstream is not very active it's unlikely to support qt6 any time soon. Given that using a virtual keyboard with KDE is optional and most users likely do not use a virtual keyboard with KDE, it would be great if the dependency of plasma-workspace on maliit-keyboard could be made optional so that users who do not use a virtual-keyboard can get rid of qt5 and kf5 on their systems.

As mentioned in the meeting, there is an open pull request for starting the port for QT6. There hasn't been much activity on it however.
https://github.com/maliit/framework/pull/121

My vote is towards avoiding the risk of having maliit-keyboard accidentally uninstalled on systems where it is really required, so keeping it a hard dependency.

This seemed to follow the general consensus from the sig meeting on 24/04/29.

@farchord @marcdeop @tdawson @siosm do you mind stating what you mentioned during the meeting for this item since the OP wasn't there?

Although it's not the most active project, it's not dead. I would prefer that we keep it as a requires for now.

I have mixed feeling. Moving it to recommends does nothing for Kinoite so it's of no interest to me. The obvious fix is to work on moving it to Qt6.

So overall it's a 0 from me (I won't do the work).
